Calderon's Drive Not Enough

Feb. 9, 2003

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - California-Riverside pounded seven Oregon State pitchers for 10 runs and 11 hits en route to a 10-2 non-league baseball win Sunday afternoon, wrapping up a three-game series at Riverside Sports Complex in front of 344 fans.

OSU (1-2 overall) now goes to the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, Ariz., next Friday through Sunday. The Beavers will open the tournament against Oklahoma State on Friday at 2 p.m., then meet Arizona State on Saturday and Gonzaga on Sunday.

In the series finale at UCR (6-1), Oregon State's bats were silent with seven hits off a trio of Highlander pitchers after the Beavers had 14 hits on Saturday. Meanwhile, OSU pitchers hit six batters in addition to allowing California-Riverside's 11 hits.

UCR got on the board in the first inning with a run, but the Beavers avoided a potential big inning by the Highlanders with an inning-ending double play after UCR had loaded the bases with one out.

The Highlanders put five runs on the board in the third inning with only two hits to give the home club a 6-0 lead. UCR benefited from two hit batters, a walk and a huge error by OSU third baseman Tony Calderon to keep the rally going. As it turned out, that was all the runs the Highlanders would need.

Oregon State, down 8-0 at the start of the fifth inning, finally got on the board with a leadoff towering home run by Calderon to the 330-foot mark, the first homer of the junior's OSU career. Calderon also drove in the final Beaver run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.

UCR starter A.J. Shappi ran his record to 2-0 on the season with a solid performance. He imited OSU to six hits, struck out seven and walked only one.

California-Riverside first baseman Kevin Mangels was a thorn in the side of the Beavers. Mangels hammered a three-run triple in the five-run third inning and walloped a solo homer, his fourth of the season, in the sixth off Stephen Copeland, the fifth of OSU's seven pitchers on the day. Mangels also singled in the second inning; he needed a double for the cycle and was on deck when the bottom of the eighth inning ended.

Calderon's homer was the only extra-base hit for OSU, and Levi Webber was the only Beaver with more than one hit as he went 2-for-3.

OSU pitchers Jon Killer and Jared Sanders tossed a scoreless inning each in relief. Lefthander Nathan Pendley, from West Albany High and Linn-Benton Community College, took the loss in his first OSU start as he gave up three runs on three hits and three hit batters in two innings.

Freshman righthander Kurt Steele from Crescent Valley High made his first OSU appearance when he replaced Pendley, and Steele gave up two runs before retiring the side.
