No. 23 Softball Splits A Pair Of Games At Fiesta Bowl Tournament
Feb. 9, 2003
PHOENIX, Ariz. - The No. 23 Oregon State softball team split a pair of games on Sunday morning to finish action at the ASU Fiesta Bowl Tournament. The Beavers suffered their first loss of the season against Wisconsin (3-1) but rallied to knock off Southwest Texas State (3-1).
'It was a tough loss this morning,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'We didn't play extremely well and they had a very good pitcher.'
The Beavers managed just three hits in the contest and scored their lone run in the sixth inning. Senior Brynnen Guthrie led-off the frame with a triple and Vanessa Iapala brought her across the plate with a single.
Junior hurler Dena DuBois recorded the loss in the circle for OSU, while Wisconsin pitcher Andrea Kirchberg recorded 14 strikeouts en route to the victory.
Oregon State responded with a 3-1 win against Southwest Texas State to improve its overall record to 9-1 on the year.
'We did a nice job of coming back from the loss,' said Walker. 'Monica (Hoffman) pitched well and really shut them down. Kelly Petersen had a number of good plays defensively and Cara Maxey had what proved to be the game-winning home run.'
The Bobcats scored one run in the first inning but OSU rallied for runs in the third, fifth and sixth. Maxey finished the day 2-for-2 from the plate with a home run and stolen base. The long ball was the fourth this season for the Fresno, CA native.
'Offensively we had some well hit balls and timely hitting,' said Walker. 'It was a good weekend for us and a good way to finish the day coming back with a win.'
Monica Hoffman earned the victory to improve her record to a perfect 8-0 on the season.
Oregon State heads back to the field Friday at the UNLV Tournament. The Beavers face University of Hawaii at 9 a.m. and then meet University of Nebraska at 11:30 a.m. in a rematch of last year's NCAA Regional Tournament semifinal game.
