Cal Baseball Defeats San Jose State, 4-3
Feb. 11, 2003
BERKELEY, CA - Juniors Brian Horwitz and Chris Grossman hit back-to-back home runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to help lead Cal to a 4-3 victory over San Jose State Tuesday at Evans Diamond. The Bears have now won five games in-a-row to improve their record to 6-2, while the Spartans fell to 2-2.
Horwitz and Grossman both hit their home runs to right center field off of San Jose State reliever Carlos Torres (0-1, 1.0 inning, two hits, two runs, no walks, one strikeout) to give Cal the cushion it needed to win. The Spartans ended up scoring a run in the top of the ninth off of Bear closer Jesse Ingram on a RBI ground out by Ruben Martinez. But, Ingram (1.0 inning, one hit, one run, no walks, one strikeout) got David Pierson to ground out to second base for the final out to earn his second save of the season. The winning pitcher for Cal was sophomore left-hander Travis Talbott (1-0, 0.7 inning, no hits, no runs, no walks, one strikeout), who got the last two outs in the top of the eighth.
The Bears scored their first run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Horwitz off of San Jose State starter Frank Esposito (5.0 innings, five hits, two runs, one walk, three strikeouts). The Spartans took a 2-1 lead by scoring two runs in the sixth inning, with the help of a pair of Cal errors. The Bears were able to tie the game in the sixth on back-to-back doubles by senior left fielder Ben Conley and freshman shortstop Allen Craig.
Leading hitters for Cal were Conley and Horwitz, with two hits apiece. Sophomore starter Kyle Crist also was solid for the Bears, pitching 4.0 innings and scattering five hits, with no runs, one walk and one strikeout.
