Feb. 11, 2003
EUGENE, Ore. - University of Oregon pitcher pitcher Amy Harris, a freshman from Eugene, has been named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 4-10, commisioner Tom Hansen announced today. It is the first such honor for an Oregon pitcher since 1999 when freshman Connie McMurren (Eugene) was selected.
Harris, like McMurren a graduate of North Eugene, has been a major factor in the Ducks' 8-1 start this season. Last week, Harris led Oregon to a 3-1 victory over No. 9 Florida State at the Seminole Classic in Tallahasse, Fla., allowing just one run in six and two-thirds innings pitched. The following day, Harris relieved junior Anissa Meashintubby of Monroe in the sixth inning and went on to pitch seven full innings against 17th-ranked Georgia. Harris struck out six and didn't allow a run as the Ducks held on to defeat the Bulldogs, 3-2, in 12 innings.
Harris had nine strikeouts on the weekend and only one run allowed in 13 and two-thirds innings pitched. She improved her overall record to 3-1 and has one save on the season. The four-time all-state honoree has a team-high 26 strike outs in 27.2 innings pitched and boasts an ERA of 0.65.
At 8-1, the Ducks are off to their best-ever start and Harris' wins over two ranked teams marked the first time since May of 2000 that Oregon defeated ranked opponents in back-to-back games.
