UCLA Men Compete at LA Invitational Saturday

The UCLA Bruins will have a strong representation in the men'sevents at the 43rd annual Los Angeles Invitational indoor track meet, Saturday,Feb. 15, at the Sports Arena. The LA Invitational indoor track meet is the nation's second oldest undercover meet. The classic meet will embrace its usual formula of world class events, collegiate standouts and nearly 2000 high school athletes from 500 schools. The event is second only to the Millrose Games in New York among the nation's track meets in history. A total of 105 Olympic gold medalists and dozens of world and American record holders have competed over the years, in the L.A. Invitational.
Bruin men's head coach Art Venegas has entered a strong UCLA men's squad. Freshman Chauncee Smith, senior Joe Hunter and freshman Jacques Lazarus will compete in the 55-meter dash; sophomore Rodney Diggs, sophomore Robert Hambleton, freshman Matt Willis, freshman Chris Dunbar and freshman Claude Distin will run the 500 yards, while sophomore Yoo Kim, senior Jared Drake and junior Pat Luke will compete in the pole vault. Bruin greats competing in the meet include former NCAA indoor champ and Olympic Trials finalist half-miler Jess Strutzel, and NCAA pole vault medalist Scott Slover.Information about the meet is available at www.frankenenterprises.com For ticket information call (213) 748-6131.
Last Week/at United Heritage Invitational, Boise, ID
On Feb. 7-8, UCLA competed at the United Heritage Invitational Indoor T & F meet, hosted by Boise State.
On the track, the Bruins had three event winners - sophomore Nick Thornton in the 800m (1:51.63), sophomore Ben Aragon in the 3000m (8:30.29) and UCLA's distance medley relay (9:52.7).
Also running well for the Bruins were - sophomore Jonathan Williams, who placed third in the 60m hurdles (8.10); in the 400m, sophomore Denye Versher was second (47.61) and freshman Craig Everhart was third (47.91); senior Phil Young finished third in the 800m (1:53.52); sophomore Erik Emilsson was second in the mile (4:16.10) and senior Justin Patananan placed second in the 3000m (8:31.83).
In the field, the Bruins had one event winner, junior Juaune Armon in the long jump (24-2.50).
Other top placements included - junior Pat Luke, tied for third in the pole vault (16-6) and junior Dan Ames, who was third overall (second collegian) in the shot put (62-6.50) and third in the weight throw (63-8.25).
On Feb. 21-22, the Bruins will again travel to Boise, ID to compete in the 2003 MPSF Indoor T & F Championships.
Other important Indoor dates include - Feb. 28-March 2-USA T & F Indoor Championships in Boston; March 8-last chance qualifying meet in Seattle and March 14-15 at the 2003 NCAA Indoor Championships, hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
Outdoors, UCLA's first 2003 home meet at Drake Stadium will be Saturday, March 1, hosting Cal Poly-SLO and CS Los Angeles.
