Andrus Eclipses NCAA Provisional Mark In First Day of Iowa State Classic
Feb. 14, 2003
AMES, Iowa - Junior All-American Ryan Andrus won the 5,000 meters in a lifetime best, and notched an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 14:06.33 in the process, as he led the Ducks in the first day of competition at the Iowa State Classic, run at the Lied Recreation Center, and hosted by Iowa State University.
Andrus ran in the second of two sections, in which he led four runners under the provisional standard of 14:15.00. The Wisconsin transfer, who ran 14:11.8 in his freshman season in Madison, held off a current Badger, Simon Bairu, who claimed runner-up honors in 14:07.02. Northern Arizona's Bruno Mazzotta clocked the same exact time, but was awarded third place, while Peter Kiprono of Alabama was only .20 seconds back (14:07.22) in fourth.
The only other Duck competitors Friday evening were freshman sprinters Matthew Scherer and Eric Mitchum, who both competed in the 200-meter dash. Scherer, a freshman from Sumner, Ill., made his college debut at 200 meters, and was 15th overall, out of 11 heats, in a time of 22.05. Mitchum, a freshman from Calumet City, Ill., who is only .01 seconds from the NCAA Provisional standard in the 60-meter hurdles, also ran his first collegiate 200, and finished 36th overall, in 22.51.
The meet continues tommorow, with the majority of the events taking place, and the Ducks enter a number of competitors. The Duck women also compete tommorow, as they enter 28 athletes in the University of Washington Invitational, held at the Dempsey Indoor Complex, in Seattle, Wash.
