Ducks Climb Five Spots to Finish 14th at Hawaii
Feb. 14, 2003
WAIKOLOA, Hawaii - The Oregon men's golf team shot an even par 288 and climbed five spots to 14th on the final day of the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate. The Ducks entered Friday's round in 19th, but received 1-under par 71s from freshman Gregg LaVoie and senior John Ellis to move up in the standings.
LaVoie finished 41st in the tournament at 2-over 216, while Ellis and senior Chris Carnahan tied for 65th at 219.
'LaVoie played pretty well,' said coach Steve Nosler. 'He's going to get better as he comes along. He does a really good job of putting the ball in the hole.'
UCLA held on to win the tournament at 837, one stroke better than Texas Christian' 838. Oklahoma, Houston and Washington tied for third at 849. The Ducks carded a three-day total of 867 for their 15th-place finish.
'Our scores aren't that bad,' said Nosler. 'We're right around par. It's just not at the level we need to be at when we're going against this kind of competition. But we made a nice comeback today and I'm very satisfied to finish on a positive note.'
Adam Meyer of Texas Christian was the tournament's individual medalist at 67-70-67-202.
Oregon returns to action in three weeks at the Cleveland Southwestern Classic March 3-4 in West Lake Village, Calif.
