Feb. 14, 2003
The third-ranked California softball team opened the UNLV Tournament with its eighth consecutive win of the season, blanking Purdue, 1-0, in the first of two scheduled games Friday afternoon in Henderson, NV. With the win, the defending National Champions remain undefeated this season, 8-0, and the Boilermakers drop to 1-4.
Sophomore Kelly Anderson collected the win (5-0), striking out nine, walking one batter and allowing three hits.Senior Leighann Burke tossed her second loss of the season (1-2) in 5.0 innings (five hits, three walks, three strikeouts). Freshman Diana LaRiva came in for relief in the sixth inning, introduced by senior Veronica Nelson who drove the first pitch thrown through the left side for her second of single of the day. Nelson led the Bears attack with two hits in the game.
The Golden Bears scored all they needed to edge past the Boilermakers in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and runners at first and second off base hits by freshman Haley Woods and sophomore Jessica Pamanian, sophomore Chelsea Spencer roped a single to left center, scoring pinch runner LeAnna Hoglen. Purdue's left fielder relayed to its shortstop, who threw a bullet to home plate, gunning out Pamanian at home to end the inning.
Purdue threatened in the second off two singles and one Cal fielding error. With two runners on and one out, Anderson struck out the next two batters to retire the side and the Boilermakers' scoring opportunity.
The Bears are now 3-0 versus the Boilermakers and 48-16 all-time versus the Big Ten.
Next up, Cal faces Texas Tech at 7 p.m. for game two of the 16-team UNLV Tournament.
