Beavers Finish 12th In TaylorMade Intercollegiate Men's Golf

Feb. 15, 2003

WAIKOLOA, Haw. - Oregon State moved up five places on the final day of play to finish 12th in the 26-team TaylorMade Intercollegiate men's golf tournament Friday. The Beavers shot a 9-over-par 865 for the three-day tournament.

OSU's Michael Jurgensen shot even-par 72 on his final round to move into a tie for 26th place, finishing at even-par 214. Daren Grieg's 2-under 70 on Friday gave him a tie for 38th place at 1-over 215.

UCLA won the event at 20-under 836, and Texas Christian's Adam Meyer was the medalist at 12-under 202 on the Beach and Kings courses.

Oregon State moved up five places on each of the tournament's final two days after being tied for 22nd after the opening day of play.

'The guys played well today, and we weren't playing in easy conditions,' OSU head coach Brian Watts said. 'We moved up a lot in the field due to it raining all day, and at times it was heavy rain. The wind was calm most of the day, but it picked up for about three holes and we were on three holes where it didn't affect us much. Some teams aren't used to playing in wind and rain; playing at OSU, that's to our advantage. We rooted for the wind and rain to come up.'

OSU got off to a slow start in its final round, but Watts said the Beavers managed to turn things around quickly. Oregon State had three golfers under par going into the final four holes, then had a few struggles closing out the round.

'But we held in there tight and battled through it,' Watts said. 'I was proud of the way our guys fought through the elements today. Overall, it was a decent tournament for us. We'll look back at this and see all the mental mistakes we made. Hopefully we'll learn form those and keep progressing throughout the spring.'

OSU next plays March 3-4 at the Cleveland Golf Classic in Los Angeles.
