Ducks Rally Late, Fall Short To Northridge
Feb. 15, 2003
POWAY, Calif. - Oregon senior Amber Hutchison hit her first home run of the season - a two-out, two RBI shot over the right field fence in the bottom of the seventh inning - to force extra innings in the Ducks' afternoon game versus Northridge at the Campbell/Cartier Classic in Poway, Calif., Saturday. The comeback was short-lived for Oregon as the Matadors went on to win 6-5 in nine innings of play.
'It was a great comeback,' Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. 'We continued to battle and got some very timely hitting. Unfortunately we couldn't get the win, but I'm very happy with how we fought.'
The Ducks trailed throughout the game after Northridge scored a run in the top of the first and second innings to hold the early advantage. In the first inning, left fielder Emilee Moores drove in Christen Bedwell with a two-out RBI single to center fielder. The Matadors scored with two outs again in the second when Bedwell drove in shortstop Christy Menefee.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Oregon pulled within a run after freshman Beth Boskovich led off with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a single down the right side by senior Andrea Vidlund. Boskovich scored on a deep fly by first baseman Mari Lyn Petrick.
Northridge rallied with two outs again in the fifth inning when pitcher Kia Fennell hit an RBI double that scored Jen Dishner. Moores followed with a double to center field, scoring Fennell and extending the Matadors lead to 4-1.
Boskovich, who finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, responded again, hitting her first career home run in the sixth inning that scored junior Julie Jaime and pulled the Ducks within a run. Northridge added a run in the top of the seventh before Hutchison tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Northridge scored in the top of the ninth inning and the Ducks were unable to get on the board in their final at bat. Oregon senior Andrea Vidlund tallied the loss for the Ducks.
