No. 3 Cal Blanks Portland State, 5-0

Feb. 15, 2003

Freshman pitcher Kristina Thorson was two outs away from tossing a no-hitter Saturday afternoon against Portland State as the third-ranked California softball team defeated Portland State, 5-0, at the UNLV Tournament. With the win, the Golden Bears improve their record to 10-1 and the Vikings fall to 0-4.

Making her first collegiate start, freshman Kristina Thorson pitched a gutsy performance, striking out six and tossing 6.1 innings of no-hit ball. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Rachel Manibusan singled up the middle to break up the no-hitter. After striking out the next batter, Thorson gave up her second hit of the game to Annie Peccia before she could retire the side.

In her first starting stint of the season for Portland State, senior Megan Herscher (1-0) took the loss, tossing 3.0 innings (seven hits, five runs, two walks, one strikeout) before she was relieved by Michelle Hext (4.0 innings, one hit, one walk, three strikeouts).

Cal scored its first run in the third, off consecutive singles by Vicky Galindo, Lindsay James and Kristen Morley. With the bases loaded, second baseman Eryn Manahan hit a sacrifice fly to deep left field, scoring Galindo. The Vikings relayed the ball in, throwing out James at third who was tagging up, to end the inning.

The Bears woke up their bats again in the fourth, collecting four runs off three hits. All-Pac-10 Veronica Nelson was hit by the pitch to lead off the inning, followed by a walk to freshman Haley Woods. Catcher Courtney Scott then singled to load the bases. Shortstop Chelsea Spencer singled, scoring pinch runner LeAnna Hoglen, increasing Cal's lead to 2-0. The Bears fired off two more runs by Jessica Pamanian's RBI single and Galindo's walk with the bases loaded.

Center fielder Lindsay James led the Bears with two hits (2-for-4, RBI). Cal collected eight hits to Portland State's two.

The Bears take on Hawaii tomorrow, Sunday at 2 p.m. for their final game of the UNLV Tournament.
