Pietsch's Two-Run Homer, Gonzaga Errors Lift Beavers To 5-1 Win

Feb. 15, 2003

SURPRISE, Ariz. - -

Oregon State capitalized on two key Gonzaga errors and got a linedrive homerun from Seth Pietsch to claim a 5-1 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon and improve its record to 3-2 on the year.

OSU is 2-0 on the weekend at the Coca-Cola Classic at Surprise Stadium's Billy Parker Field. OSU and Arizona State (15-1) square off Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Pacific in the final game of the weekend.

Pietsch became the first player to hit a homerun at Surprise Stadium when he drove a two-out, 2-2 pitch over the left-centerfield wall and onto the outfield berm to give OSU a 2-1 lead in the third. The blast scored Rob Recuenco, who had reached on a fielding error by GU shortstop Grant Zurmely; both runs were unearned. Pietsch now leads the club with seven RBI and two homeruns this year.

Leading 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Beavers' Jacoby Ellsbury and Paul Richie scored unearned when Gonzaga reliever Eric Everson threw the ball wide of third base on a bunt by Chris Kunda back toward the mound.

Later in the inning, Andy Jarvis brought in Kerisi Reynolds, who went 4-for-5 on the day, on a fielder's choice to third base to give the Beavers their final 5-1 cushion. Jarvis was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a stolen base.

In all, four of OSU's five runs were unearned.

Righthander Ben Rowe (2-0) went six innings to earn the win, as the Beavers improved to 56-27 all-time against Gonzaga in a series dating back to 1919.

Gonzaga starter Errol Simonitsch lasted 4 2/3 innings and gave up six hits and the two-run shot to Pietsch; Everson lasted 1/3 innning and gave up three runs (one earned), a hit, two walks, and committed an error in OSU's big fifth inning.

OSU's Tony Calderon made a huge defensive play at third base in the fifth inning to keep a run from scoring. With the Beavers leading 2-1 with two outs, GU's (0-2) Gordon Corder ripped a one-hopper right at Calderon, which he bobbled, but controlled and fired a bullet to first to get Corder and prevent the tying run from scoring from second.

OSU had a chance to put runs on the board in the fifth when they loaded the bases with two outs, but Chris Biles was caught looking on a third strike.

Gonzaga's only run came in the second inning, when Brad Welker singled through the left side to bring in Jeff Culpepper for a brief 1-0 lead.

For the second day in a row, OSU's pitching started slowly, but recovered well and shut down the opposition while the offense churned out runs. Rowe and reliever Mike Ekstrom did not surrender a walk to Gonzaga.

After allowing six hits and striking out three, Rowe, who improved to 2-0 on the year, was replaced by Ekstrom in the top of the sixth. Ekstrom gave up three hits over the next three innings on his way to his first save of the year, never allowing a runner past second base.

OSU has allowed only one run this weekend, including Friday's 4-0 win over Oklahoma State.
