IRVINE, Calif.- The Arizona baseball team completed its first season series sweep over an opponent with a 7-1 win over UC Irvine on Sunday. Including Sunday's effort, the Arizona pitching staff limited the UCI offense to just 13 hits in the three games. Arizona improved to 6-3 with the win, while UCI, which is 0-4 at home this season, fell to 2-5 overall with the loss.
Trailing 1-0, the Wildcats broke things open in the third inning on Moises Duran's third career grand slam. Sophomore Jeff Van Houten led off the inning with a single and after a one-out walk to Brad Boyer and single to right by Trevor Crowe loaded the bases, Duran launched his team-leading third home run of the season over the wall in left field for a 4-1 Wildcat advantage.
Junior Richie Gardner (2-0) turned in the third impressive pitching performance by the Arizona starting staff of the weekend. The right-hander went 7-1/3 innings, giving up just one run while striking out six and walking only three for his second win of the season. Sophomore Mark Worrell came on to close out the win with 1 2/3 innings of relief. The Wildcat closer surrendered just two hits and struck out three of the eight hitters he faced.
Arizona returns to Tucson next weekend for a three game series against Minnesota before playing a single game against Oklahoma State on Monday.
