Beavers Fall To No. 6 Arizona State 9-4 in baseball

Feb. 16, 2003

SURPRISE, Ariz. - A pair of four-run innings cost Oregon State as the Beavers fell to sixth-ranked Arizona State 9-4 in the finale of the Coca-Cola Classic baseball tournament on Sunday afternoon. OSU (3-3 overall) had beaten Oklahoma State and Gonzaga in its first two games of the tournament, allowing just one run in 18 innings.

'Overall, we played pretty well,' Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. 'We played better than we did last weekend (in taking one of three games at California-Riverside) ... as a club, we played really solid baseball and competed well. We got after it pretty well down here; we had some practice fields for a couple of hours before our games and we were able to do some things.'

OSU leftfielder Seth Pietsch, first baseman Andy Jarvis and pitcher Jake Postlewait were named to the all-tournament team. Pietsch was 2-for-4 Sunday and Jarvis was 1-for-3; Jarvis has a hit in every game this season for the Beavers and Pietsch is on a five-game hitting streak.

ASU (17-1) picked up an unearned run in the first inning against OSU starter Stephen Copeland, but the Beavers tied the game on Kerisi Reynolds' run-scoring single in the top of the third. The Sun Devils took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning; Jon Koller relieved Copeland with two out and gave up a run-scoring single to Andre Ethier and a three-run homer to Steve Garrabrants to make it 5-1.

Jacoby Ellsbury's sacrifice fly brought OSU within 5-2 in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth, though, Dustin Pedroia led off with a homer and Rodney Allen added a two-out, three-run homer to make it 9-2.

'We made some mistakes out of the bullpen with some two-strike pitches, and they cost us some runs,' Casey said. 'We're playing so many games early, it's giving guys an opportunity for us to figure out what we can and can't do. We've done a good job responding to that and putting ourselves in a position to win most of the games we've played. We've played three and four guys who have never played a Division I game. We've made some mistakes on the bases and taken ourselves out of some innings, and we'll clean that up.

'Our outfield was outstanding today; (centerfielder) Jacoby Ellsbury made two our three outstanding catches and Seth Pietsch and (rightfielder) Chris Biles both ran down balls in the gap. Paul Richie was solid behind the plate, and our infield has done a pretty good job so far and we'll get better in that area.'

OSU completed its scoring with Ellsbury's run-scoring groundout in the sixth inning and Reynolds' sacrifice fly in the seventh. Richie was 2-for-3 for the Beavers, while Andy Baldwin pitched two scoreless innings in relief and Jared Sanders finished the game with a scoreless inning.

Oregon State is on the road again next weekend, going to the Baseball Fiesta in El Paso, Tex. The Beavers open the tournament against New Mexico on Friday at 1 p.m. PST, then on Saturday meet New Mexico State at 9:30 a.m. PST and New Mexico at 1 p.m. PST. OSU finishes the tournament next Sunday against New Mexico State at 9:30 a.m. PST.
