Bruins Complete UNLV Classic With Win Over Utah

HENDERSON, NV - The top-ranked Bruins secured the UNLV Classic championship on Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 win over Utah. The Bruins (10-1) were the only undefeated team in tournament play. Utah falls to 4-6 with the loss. Natasha Watley led the Bruins offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in the game.
The Bruins piled on the offense in the third inning, sending 11 to the plate and scoring six runs. Natasha Watley led off with a single up the middle, followed by a single to left by Monique Mejia. Watley scored and Mejia advanced to third on a single by Tairia Mims. Claire Sua scored both baserunners on a double to right center. The rally continued with Zaplatosch reaching base and advancing home on a long single by Andrea Duran. A Natasha Watley double scored Duran, giving UCLA a 6-0 lead after three innings.
In the fifth, the Bruins added one more run on a lead-off double by Zaplatosch and an RBI single to right by Watley that scored pinch-runner Julie Hoshizaki.
Keira Goerl pitched a one-hit shutout, improving her record to 8-1 on the season with the victory.
UCLA returns to action on Friday at the Florida Atlantic Tournament.
