Cal Baseball Upsets No. 19 Nebraska, 8-7

ROUND ROCK, TX - Junior right fielder Brian Horwitz hit a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth, scoring pinch runner Nick Medrano, to lead Cal to a 8-7 victory over No. 19 (ESPN poll) Nebraska Sunday at the Express College Classic in Round Rock, Texas. The Bears improved to 8-3 overall, while the Cornhuskers fell to 2-1. Cal finished 2-1 at the Express Classic, defeating Texas-Pan American, 20-5, on Friday, losing to Southwest Texas State, 6-5, in 13 innings Saturday.
The Bears played in another tight contest after losing in extra innings the day before. The Nebraska had tied the score, 7-7, in the top of the ninth on a two-out RBI double by Bubbs Merrill off of Cal's winning pitcher, freshman reliever Mike Padgett (1-1, 1.3 innings, one hit, one run, one walk, two strikeouts).
But, the Bears came back in the bottom of the ninth versus Cornhusker reliever Tim Schoeninger (0-1, 2.3 inning, two hits, one run). Junior third baseman Jeff Dragicevich led off with a single up the middle. Medrano than pinch ran for Dragicevich and was sacrificed to second base by David Nicholson. After Allen Craig advanced Medrano to third base on a ground out to shortstop, Horwitz came through with the game-winning, two strike single to right field.
Horwitz, Dragicevich and Conor Jackson were Cal's top hitters on the day. Horwitz finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, including a game tying RBI in the seventh inning. Dragicevich was 3-for-4 with and RBI in the Bears' four-run fourth inning. Jackson was 2-for-2 with an RBI single in the first inning and the go ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. Ben Conley and Matt Einspahr had back-to-back RBI singles in Cal's four run fourth inning as well.
Cal will next host Saint Mary's, Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond, before travelling to Long Beach State for a three-game series, beginning Friday, Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Long Beach's Blair Field.
