Cardinal Win Stanford Invitational

Stanford, Calif. - Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA) and Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) fanned 13 Kentucky batters and Michelle Thiry (Renton, WA) hit in three Cardinal runners as the 14th-ranked Stanford softball team defeated the Wildcats 4-1 in the championship game of the Stanford Invitational. The Cardinal improve to 10-2 while Kentucky falls to 4-6.
For the first two innings of the title game it was all Nyberg, recording six consecutive strikeouts. Stanford got the offense going in the bottom of the second when Maureen LeCocq (Woodland Hills, CA) led off the inning with a base hit to left. Heather Shook (Whittier, CA) came in to pinch run and advanced to second on Catalina Morris ' (Sonoita, AZ) single. Thiry ripped a double to center, scoring Shook and Morris for the Cardinal's first two runs of the game.
Lauren Lappin (Anaheim, CA) followed with a deep single to score Thiry for a 3-0 Stanford lead. Wildcat pitcher Amy Kendall got Kira Ching (San Lorenzo, CA) and Jessica Allister (Nacogdoches, TX) to pop out and end the inning.
Sorensen came in to relieve Nyberg in the fourth and retired the side on consecutive strikeouts. Thiry continued her hot streak with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, putting Stanford up 4-0.
Kentucky put together a rally of its own in the fifth inning. Following three consecutive infield singles that resulted in a run, Sorensen got Lori Melchi to bunt into a fielder's choice and fanned Megan Glen to end the inning.
Stanford then settled down and retired the next six Wildcat batters to claim their tournament 4-1.
Nyberg recorded six strikeouts and gave up only one run in three innings to pick up her seventh win of the season. Sorensen allowed three hits and fanned seven Wildcat batters in four innings of relief.
Thiry led the Cardinal offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI. Lappin also went 2-for-3 and recorded one RBI.
In the third place game, Penn State (1-4) came back to score two runs in the seventh inning to defeat Missouri (5-5) 3-2.
Stanford will travel to Columbus, Ga., next weekend to compete in the NFCA Leadoff Classic Feb. 21-23.
