Comeback Falls Short, Bruins Fall 9-6 To NC State
Feb. 16, 2003
Junior second baseman hit two home runs, including a three-run shot in the seventh, but the Bruins (5-5) fell short of a sweep with a 9-6 loss to North Carolina State (3-2) on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Wolfpack offense slowly built a four-run lead, posting a single run in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings. An RBI double from Justin Riley brought across the first NC State runner. Chad Orvella scored in the second after getting on base with a single and scoring on a sacrifice fly from Adam Hargrave.
A double from Marc Maynor brought in another run in the fourth. A solo home run in the sixth from Dustin Knight put the Wolfpack ahead 4-0. They would tack on two more runs in the top of the seventh when a triple from Joe Gaetti scored Maynor and Hargrave.
NC State would score two in the eighth and one in the ninth, to bring its lead back to six, leading 9-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
A pinch-hit double from Matt Sharp drove in Matt Thayer in the bottom of the ninth, to start at three-run rally. Sharp would later score on a two-run homer from Griffin. The comeback would fall short, however, as Chris Jensen struck out to end the game.
Starter Wes Whisler lasted six innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out five batters. David Johnson relieved Whisler in the seventh and allowed four runs on four hits and struck out two. Chris Cordeiro finished the game for UCLA lasting one and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Griffin's two home run performance marked the first multi-home run game of his career, while his five RBI tied a career-high.
Brett McMillan went three-for-four with a double on the day.
UCLA will be back in action on Tuesday when the Bruins face-off with UC Santa Barbara at Cesar Uyesaka Stadium. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
