Men's Tennis Wins Great Northwest Shootout With 5-2 Victory Over Tulane

Seattle, Wash. - No. 12 Washington men's tennis (8-0) won the 2003 edition of the Great Northwest Shootout with a 5-2 victory over 27th-ranked Tulane, Sunday, at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center. No. 33 San Diego State edged No. 37 Clemson, 4-3, in the consolation match earlier in the day.

The Huskies opened the day winning two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Seniors Matt Hanlin and Dillon Ruby defeated Dmitriy Koch and Mattias Westerberg 9-7, while sophomore Fred Sundsten and junior Nick Weiss breezed past Jorge Lievano and Hannu Piiroinen, 8-1, at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles respectively. The 18th-ranked doubles tandem of senior Ari Strasberg and sophomore Alex Vlaski was upset by the 29th-ranked Tulane duo of Michael Kogan and Victor Romero, 8-2, in the No. 1 position.

The singles portion of the match featured four of six possible wins for the Huskies, highlighted by sophomore Christoph Palmanshofer's straight-set victory in the No. 4 position to clinch the team victory. Palmanshofer defeated Lievano, 6-4, 6-4. Also winning in straight sets were sophomore Peter Scharler over Westerberg, 6-1, 6-0, and Ruby over Piiroinen, 7-6, 6-2.

Hanlin, ranked 11th nationally in singles, came back from a 3-6 first set loss to win the next two over 70th-ranked Romero, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Vlaski suffered his first dual loss of the season, falling to No. 32 Kogan, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2. Strasberg lost in straight sets to Koch, 7-6, 7-6.

The Huskies, having won eight-straight to open the 2003 spring season, will take next week off before hosting five straight matches at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center, beginning with Oregon, Friday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m.
