No. 23 Softball Rolls Past Cal Poly, 7-2
Feb. 16, 2003
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - No. 23 Oregon State pounded 12 hits en route to a 7-2 victory against Cal Poly in Sunday's softball action at the UNLV Desert Classic.
The Beavers improved their record to 11-4 on the year and earned their second victory of the season against the Mustangs.
OSU scored a trio of runs in the third inning as sophomore Kelly Petersen belted a two-RBI single. The Beavers picked up their third run of the frame when Clare Burnum roped a triple that plated Petersen. The scoring proved to be all the Beavers would need on the afternoon. Cal Poly added runs in the third and fifth innings but Oregon State countered with two runs in both the fourth and fifth.
Petersen finished the day with a perfect 3-for-3 effort from the plate, including four RBI and a double. Freshman Lisa Allen also finished a perfect 3-for-3 in the contest and scored three runs. Allen also recorded the first home run of her career. OSU tallied four extra-base hits on the afternoon. Senior Brynnen Guthrie got in on the action with a double.
'Offensively we did a really good job in an adverse situation,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'It was a difficult time with the wind and the umpire's strike-zone but we stayed focused and were consistent throughout the day.'
Beaver hurler Monica Hoffman picked up her ninth win of the season in four innings of work. Freshman Amy Klever entered the game in the fifth inning and combined with Hoffman to allow just four Mustang hits.
'Amy Klever did a great job in relief,' said Walker. 'Lisa Allen had a great day, finishing 3-for-3 and Kelly Petersen hit the ball very well. Offensively we were very balanced throughout the lineup.'
Oregon State returns to action on Friday at the prestigious NFCA Lead-Off Classic in Columbus, GA. The tournament field is composed of the nation's elite softball programs. OSU opens bracket play with a 9 a.m. contest against No. 25 Massachusetts.
