No. 4 Bears Defeat No. 63 Bulldogs, 5-2

BERKELEY, Calif. - The fourth-ranked California men's tennis team (5-0) continued their winning weekend by topping No. 63 Fresno State 5-2 Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Bears other victory came yesterday when they beat UC Santa Barbara 6-1.

In the doubles competition, the Bulldog's Hector Almada and Sergiu Modoc outdid Cal's Steve Berke and Robert Kowalczyk 8-5. The Bears claimed the doubles point by winning the remaining two matches. Sophomore Patrick Briaud and Junior Balazs Veress claimed top honors on court two over Alex Krohn and Andy Sinn 8-2. On court three, Conor Niland and Mik Ledvonova sealed the deal with an 8-2 victory over Greg Shearer and Nima Roshan.

The Bears were able to take four of the six singles points by defeating the Bulldogs in key matches. On court one, Fresno State's Hector Almada played a tough 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 match to eventually overcome the Budapest, Hungary native Veress. A straight 6-1, 6-2 set handed Niland a victory over Stefan Suta. On court three, Kowalczyk defeated Shearer in a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 set.

California next heads to the USTA/ITA National Indoors in Louisville, Kentucky from February 20-23, 2003.
