Wrestling Loses to Oregon State
Feb. 16, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon wrestling team was unable to sweep the season series with Oregon State, as the Beavers won Sunday at the Gill Coliseum, 27-13. The Beavers (10-8, 8-2) scored 21 straight points near the end of the meet to clinch the victory over the Ducks (7-11, 5-4).
The Ducks took a 10-6 lead at the midway point of the dual behind decision victories from Casey Hunt (141) and No. 11 Shane Webster (174), as well as a major decision by Branson Phillips (157). It easily could have been 16-0 at that point, as both of Oregon's losses came in overtime. Oregon State's Tony Hook upset Tony Overstake at 149, 3-2, using a late reversal to send it to overtime. Matt Ellis knocked off Luke Larwin at 165, 3-1, to pick up Oregon State's other win in the first half.
'Those two overtime losses were real important in this dual,' Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney. 'That being said, both of our guys wrestled hard and they'll be fine for the Pac-10 tournament.'
It was almost all Oregon State in the last five matches. The Beavers scored 21 straight points from 184 through 125 to secure a 27-10 lead. Oregon State scored two falls in a row at 197 and heavyweight that put the match away.
A huge bright spot for the Ducks came in the final match of the night, as junior Jason Harless won his match at 133, 9-2. Harless missed the last four dual meets for the Ducks with a knee injury, and it was unsure whether he would be able to wrestle at all on Sunday. Harless dominated in his match throughout, almost scoring a first-period pin.
'We needed to test it out and see where he was with it,' Kearney said. 'Jason showed he was able to overcome it.'
The Ducks will have their final dual meet of the season Wednesday in Portland against the Portland State Vikings. Oregon has won the last 20 meetings between the two teams.
