Jason Gardner Named Finalist for Senior CLASS Award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - University of Arizona men's basketball player Jason Gardner was named one of 10 finalists for the 2003 Senior CLASS Award, which is presented to the outstanding senior male NCAA Division I basketball player.
Joining Gardner on the list of finalists is Matt Carroll of Notre Dame, Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich of Kansas, Brian Cook of Illinois, Reece Gaines of Louisville, Josh Howard of Wake Forest, Kyle Korver of Creighton, Hollis Price of Oklahoma and David West of Xavier.
Gardner, a 5-foot-10, guard from Indianapolis, Ind., leads Arizona in scoring (14.9 ppg), assists (5.0), steals (1.9), minutes played (741) and three-point field goals (49), while also posting a career-best 4.0 rebounds per game average. He is shooting 41.0 percent from the field, including 36.3 percent from three-point range, and 74.7 percent from three-point range.
In his 126-game collegiate career, Gardner has amassed 1,839 points, 301 three-point field goals, 575 assists, 208 steals. He currently ranks in the top 10 in 11 Arizona career statistical categories. Gardner is the only player in Arizona history to record more than 500 assists and 200 steals.
Now in its second year, the Senior CLASS Award, an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, was launched by CBS sportscaster and Honorary Chairman Dick Enberg. The 10 finalists for the 2003 award were selected by a national committee of sportswriters and sportscasters who cover Division I college basketball based on performance during the current season.
The 2003 Senior CLASS Award winner will be determined by three entities: the national media committee, Division I college basketball coaches and nationwide fan balloting. Beginning Feb. 17, fans can vote on the award's internet site at www.seniorclassaward.com.
The winner will be announced in March and given the award at the Senior CLASS Award Tribute Gala in Kansas City, Mo., on Friday, April 25.
Arizona is next in action on Saturday, Feb. 22, as the top-ranked Wildcats take on Arizona State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST and can be seen on Fox Sports Net Arizona.
