No. 7 ASU Gymnasts Travel To No. 8 Stanford Friday

This Week --Seventh-ranked Arizona State returns to the road on Friday, February 21, versus No. 8 Stanford at 7:30 p.m. at Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto, California. ASU holds a 14-4 lead in the all-time series with Stanford. Friday's meet marks the seventh ranked opponent in 2003 for the Sun Devils, as they have faced No. 8 Stanford at the Maui Invitational (1/3), No. 17 Washington (1/17), No. 5 Utah (1/24), No. 13 Arizona (1/31), No. 9 Oregon State (2/7), No. 1 UCLA (2/16) and now No. 8 Stanford again. Rankings this week are based on total season average scores through Feb. 17, 2003.
ASU In The Rankings --This week ASU is No. 7 nationally. Arizona State debuted at No. 15 in the GymInfo rankings, based on the preseason coaches poll released January 2. Pac-10 Conference foe UCLA was selected to win the crown with 752 overall votes and 20 first-place bids. ASU received 333 overall votes and was neighbored in the standings by No. 7 Stanford (570), No. 10 Arizona (444) and No. 13 Oregon State (355). Meet Highlights From 2003 --ASU-UCLA (2/16/03): ASU shattered the school record team score, yet lost to No. 1 UCLA, 198.400-198.150. Maggie Germaine won the all-around, posting a career-best and school record 39.775. Ashley Kelly's career-high 39.625 tied for second. ASU's beam score of 49.875 was a school record and a national season-high. Germaine and Ashley Ellsberry scored career-high 10.0's on beam. On floor, Germaine and Cassidy Vreeke tied career-highs with 9.950, sharing first.ASU-Oregon State (2/16/03): Maggie Germaine won the all-around, posting a 39.400.Germaine tied for 1st on floor (9.925) and placed 2nd on beam (9.850). Cassidy Vreeke tied for 1st on vault (9.875). Ashley Ellsberry tied for 2nd on bars (9.875).ASU-UA (1/31/03): Arizona State recorded its 7th-highest score in school history, defeating No. 13 Arizona, 196.950-196.175 in Tucson. The Sun Devils set a school record on bars with a 49.475. Junior Maggie Germaine tied her own school record (and career-high) in the all-around with a 39.625.ASU-Utah (1/24/03): Arizona State gave 23rd-year head coach John Spini his first road victory over the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, defeating the Utes 197.450-197.150 in front of 9,032 fans at the Huntsman Center. The loss marked the second home loss for Utah this year, which is only the second time that has happened in their 28-year history. It was ASU's first victory over Utah in Salt Lake City since 1976. ASU posted its third-highest team score ever en route to its fourth win of 2003.ASU-Washington (1/17/03): The Sun Devils opened the 2003 home season at Wells Fargo Arena versus Pac-10 foe No. 17 Washington and took first-place with a score of 197.300, the third-highest team score in school history at the time. Washington posted a 194.150. Sun Devil junior Maggie Germaine scored a school record and career-high all-around total of 39.625, placing first. She also scored a career-high 9.90 on beam, tied a career-high on floor (9.95) and set a season-high on vault (9.9). Senior Ashley Ellsberry tied a career-high with a 9.925 on floor and set career highs on vault (9.8) and bars (9.875). Sophomore Kari Muth set a career-high on beam (9.9) and tied a career best on bars (9.9). Freshman Ashley Kelly, only in her second ASU meet, posted career highs in all four events: vault (9.875), bars (9.9), beam (9.95) and floor (9.825).
ASU-Maui Invitational (1/3/03): ASU defeated New Hampshire and San Jose State, but lost to Stanford (196.050-194.200). Freshman Ashley Kelly had a strong college debut, placing third in the all-around with a 38.975. It was the best all-around score at ASU since Elizabeth Reid's 39.300 at the NCAA Super Six (4/23/99), representing a span of 45 months or 37 actual meets.
ASU's John Spini Looking For Home Win No. 150 --ASU head coach John Spini has 149 career victories at home, just one shy of No. 150. He will get that chance in the UNO's Classic, Friday, February 28 at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.
Sun Devils Hot In All-Around --Arizona State gymnasts have posted 11 of the Top 18 all-Around scores in school history this season through six meets. Junior Maggie Germaine owns five of the scores, including the school record 39.775 (vs. UCLA 2/16/03).
