Cal Back to Boise for MPSF Championships

The University of California men's and women's indoor track and field teams head to Boise, ID for the Mountain Pacific Conference Championships, Feb. 21-22. The meet, hosted by the University of Arizona, takes place at the Jackson Track in the Idaho Sports Center. Action begins at 12 p.m. MT on Friday and 10 a.m. MT on Saturday.

The MPSF is comprised of teams from the Big West, Mountain West, Pac-10, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences. Cal will compete against teams from Arizona, Cal State Northridge, Idaho, Long Beach State, Stanford, UCLA, Utah State, Washington State, Cal Poly, Oregon and UC Irvine. The Stanford men's team is the only squad ranked in the Trackwire 25 at No. 6. The meet features several strong women's teams, as squads the from UCLA (No. 6), Stanford (No. 7), Arizona (No. 18) and Washington State (No. 23), each hold national rankings.

The Golden Bears' men's and women's indoor track and field teams won five events at the Wolfpack Invitational Saturday in Reno, Nevada. The women's team won three events, while the men's squad captured two victories. Individual winners on the women's side included freshman Osarhiemen Omwanghe's victory in the 55m hurdles (7.99). She also placed second in the 55m dash (7.12). Redshirt freshman Elzunia Lamb won the long jump with a season-best mark of 19-2.75. For the men, freshman Teak Wilburn won the high jump with a season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 7-1.00. Sophomore David Glasgow turned in a runner-up performance in the high jump, finishing second with a season-best mark of 6-9.00. Both the men's and women's 4x400 relay teams were also victorious. The men's team won the race in 3:23.56, while the women finished first with a time of 3:52.02.

The Golden Bears return to Berkeley for their first home competition, the Blue & Gold Intrasquad meet on March 1 at Edwards Stadium. Indoor competition concludes with the NCAA Indoor Championships, Mar. 14-15 in Fayetteville, AR. Cal then opens the spring season hosting Boise State and Azusa Pacific on Mar. 21-22 at Edwards Stadium. Start times for those meets is at 11 a.m.

This weekend conludes Cal's hosting of the Saturday All Comers meets at Edwards Stadium. As usual, events begin at 11 a.m., except the hammer which starts at 8:30 a.m. The meet is open to all age groups, high school, open and master athletes. Admission is $2.

Chris Huffins, former NCAA decathlon champion at the University of California and current assistant track & field coach at Georgia Tech, was named Cal's new director of track and field and cross country on October 16, 2002. Huffins, a two-time U.S. Olympic decathlete who won the bronze medal at the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia, becomes the seventh head track and field coach in California history. He replaces Erv Hunt, who recently assumed a new executive administrative role in the Golden Bears' athletic department after directing Cal's track and field program for 30 years.
