Pac-10 Baseball Player/Pitcher Of The Week
Feb. 18, 2003
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC freshman catcher Jeff Clement has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and ARIZONA junior right-hander Sean Rierson has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 11-17, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Clement, from Marshalltown, Iowa, hit .583 (7-for-12) with four home runs, eight RBI and a 1.462 slugging percentage in the Trojans' series sweep against No. 23 South Alabama. Clement became the first Trojan since Jason Lane (April 24-25, 1999, vs. Arizona State) to record back-to-back multi-home run games when he hit two on Feb. 14 and two on Feb. 15. He is now batting .286 on the year and leads the team in home runs (4) and RBI (8).
Rierson, from Phoenix, Ariz., became the first Wildcat pitcher in nearly 20 years to toss a two-hit, complete-game this weekend at UC Irvine. He surrendered just a pair of infield singles to UCI en route to the 6-0 shutout win over the Anteaters. Rierson needed only 104 pitches to pick up his first win of the season, as he struck out five and did not walk a batter in the game. Former Arizona great Joe Magrane was the last pitcher to go the distance on a two-hitter in a 10-1 win over UNLV on Feb. 4, 1984.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Clement in his career, and the 49th selection all-time for Southern California. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the first such for Rierson, and the 25th selection all-time for Arizona.
Also nominated for Player of the Week were Dustin Pedroia, ASU; Brian Horwitz, CAL; Kerisi Reynolds, OSU; John Mayberry, Jr., STAN. Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week were Mark Sopko, ASU; Jesse Ingram, CAL; Jake Postlewait, OSU; John Hudgins, STAN; Brian Bannister, USC.
