Feb. 18, 2003
VALLEJO, Calif. - -
Ashlei Pendleton and Stacie Ferguson are among the top 10 competitors after Tuesday's first round of the LUNA Bay Area Classic, helping the Oregon State women's golf team to sixth place in the 12-team field.
The teams wrap up the 36-hole tournament with the final 18 Wednesday morning.
In all, the Beavers shot 322 on the hilly, hazard-filled Hiddenbrooke Country Club - a par-72 track. OSU is 10 shots out of second place and four out of third.
Pendleton, a senior from Las Vegas, Nev., fired a 3-over 75 to forge a five-way tie for third. Ferguson, the only other senior on the team, shot 77 and is one of six players tied for ninth.
For their careers, Ferguson has two top-10 finishes and Pendleton one.
After the senior tandem, it was Alex Lucio recording an 84 to tie for 36th and Laura Skinner with an 86 to round out the counting scores. Alex Lee shot 88, but only the low four scores count toward the team total.
Playing as an individual, Kelly Kerkvliet carded an 85 and is tied for 43rd.
'This course is very difficult, but that's no excuse for not playing better today,' 13th-year head coach Rise Lakowske said. 'We had two good scores with Ashlei's 75 and Stacie's 77, but we made some choices that cost us some shots.
'Hopefully, we will make better choices tomorrow and pick up some shots on the field to get in better position.'
Eleventh-ranked California, playing on a familiar layout as they co-host the tournament with San Francisco, leads by 16 shots over No. 7 Washington after posting an 8-over 296.
Cal's Sarah Huarte and Sophia Sheridan are the top two individuals after shooting 72 and 74, respectively. Huarte was the only golfer at par Tuesday.
