Simms And Kapek Get A Jump On The New Season

USC All-American jumpers Allen Simms and Julien Kapek took the top two spots in the indoor triple jump at the Tyson Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas this past weekend.

Simms went a personal-best 55-5, while Kapek--who took third in the triple jump at last year's NCAA outdoor meet--went 53-2 1/4.

Simms also won the long jump with a mark of 24-11 1/4. His indoor triple jump mark is currently the third-best in the nation and No. 1 among collegians.

Several Trojans also competed at the 43rd annual L.A. Indoor Invitational at the Sports Arena on Saturday.

Freshman hurdler Ginnie Powell won the women's 55-meter hurdles in a time of 7.71, while sophomore Wes Felix won his 55-meter dash race in 6.37 over freshman teammate Garry Jones (6.40).

Senior Spring Harris won the high jump with a mark of 5-8, while sophomore Alexis Weatherspoon won her 55-meter race in 7.00 seconds.

Other finishers at the L.A. Invitational: Men's 55 meters(race one)--6. Andre Serrette (6.79), (race two) 3. Justin Tolliver (6.53), (race three) 3. Miguel Fletcher (6.40), (race four) 3. Darrell Rideaux (6.25).

Finally, USC sent athletes to the Long Beach Invitational, also on Saturday:

Sophomore Kenneth Thomas finished second in the 110m HH (14.52) and first in the 400m IH (53.52). Junior Andre Serrette won the long jump with a mark of 24-1.

On the women's side, Rae Stumbough (10:34.13), Kate Pinta (10:38.22) and Kate Neeper (10:45.22) swept the top three spots in the 3,000m run, while Liesl Griffin was second in the 100m HH (15.56). Freshman Tunisia Johnson won the 400m IH in a time of 62.44.

The Trojans are next in action at the Claremont Relays this Saturday before hosting the Trojan Invitational at Katherine B. Loker Stadium on March 1.
