Women's Tennis to Host No. 3 USC and No. 9 UCLA

The Arizona women's tennis team will host USC and UCLA this weekend in hopes of bouncing back from a Pac-10 loss to Oregon on Sunday. The Wildcats will take on No. 3 USC Friday, Feb. 21, at 1:30 p.m., and No. 9 UCLA Saturday at noon. Both matches will be played at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
The Wildcat women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday versus the Oregon Ducks, 4-3. The loss also marked the Cats' first defeat in the Pac-10. The visiting Ducks defeated Arizona after rain delayed the match Friday. In singles play, graduate student Emilie Scribot defeated Oregon's Daria Panova in the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-0. Playing in the second position for the first time this season, sophomore Maja Mlakar fell to Monika Gieczys, 6-4, 6-2. In the third spot, Oregon's Courtney Nagle handed sophomore Dianne Hollands her first singles loss of the season, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5. In the fourth spot, junior Debbie Larocque defeated Julie Merle, 7-5, 6-2. Playing in the fifth position, sophomore Kelly Perry won her match versus Jamie Marshall, 6-3, 6-2. Rounding out the singles action for the Wildcats, freshman Kristy Randono fell to Ester Bak in the sixth spot, 6-0, 6-2. Oregon went on to win the doubles point, taking two of three matches. In the first spot, Hollands and Scribot teamed up to win their second doubles match of the season, defeating Panova and Nagle, 8-6. In the second spot, Oregon's Bak and Gieczys defeated No. 25 Mlakar and Larocque, 8-2. In the third position, Oregon's Leksinska and Marshall defeated Arizona's duo of Perry and freshman Zorica Zasova, 9-7.
The USC women's tennis team heads to Tucson with an overall record of 6-1, and a 1-0 record in Pac-10 play. The Women of Troy have three singles players ranked in the top 100, and two doubles teams ranked in the top 50. The Trojans' No. 1 player is No. 3 Jewel Peterson, whose singles record is 14-7. Also ranked for USC are No. 55 Maureen Diaz, and No. 90 Tiffany Brymer. Ranked in doubles for the Trojans are the No. 9 duo of Brymer and Peterson (12-5), and No. 40 Loyola and Luana Magnani (5-4).
The No. 9 Bruins women's tennis team will take on the Wildcats in hopes of improving its Pac-10 record of 0-1. 5-3 on the season, UCLA comes to Arizona with one ranked player in its arenal: No. 84 Jackie Carleton, with a record of 16-7.
Head Coach Vicky Maes
In her first year of coaching at theUA since graduating from Arizona in 1999 with a BS in business administration, Coach Maes brough the Arizona women's tennis team from an initial national ranking of 54, to the team's final ranking of 19. In her second year as head coach, Maes hopes to further advance the team's success. In fall play, Maes and the Wildcat women's tennis team recorded several wins, highlighted by a sweep of the singles and doubles titles at the Fall Desert Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. In the regular season, Maes has led the Wildcats to a record of 2-1, and looks to improve the team's Pac-10 record of 0-1 this weekend versus USC and UCLA.
