Arizona Women's Golf To Play Host to Wildcat Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. - The top-rated University of Arizona women's golf team will play host to its lone home tournament of the year, Monday through Wednesday, Feb. 24-26, when 18 of the nation's top teams tackle Arizona National Golf Club at Sabino Springs in the annual Wildcat Invitational.
Traditionally among the finest women's collegiate golf events in the nation, the 2003 Wildcat Invitational is a 54-hole event, which will be contested at the par 72, 6,134-yard Arizona National Golf Club. Eighteen holes will be contested daily with action beginning at 7:30 a.m. by shotgun start.
'We look forward to playing in front of our hometown fans each year,' said Arizona head coach Greg Allen. 'There are a number of things to be excited about this year; with our freshmen having their first chance to compete in Tucson and our chance to see where we stack up against our conference rivals. We're also looking forward to showcasing our newly-renovated facility at Arizona National.'
Six of the top-10 rated golfers will compete in the Wildcat Invitational, including Arizona's own Erica Blasberg. The field will also feature seven teams rated in the top 15 of the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and eight teams currently ranked in the top 25 of the NGCA Coaches Poll. Individually, the top four golfers in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index will square off.
Scheduled to compete are host Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Duke, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Pepperdine, San Jose State, SMU, Southern California, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas, Tulsa, UCLA, Washington.
The Wildcats, currently rated top-rated in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and ranked third in the NGCA Coaches Poll, have posted top-three finishes in four five tournaments in the 2002-03 season. Arizona opened the 2002-03 season with team and individual wins at the NCAA Fall Preview among a talent-loaded field.
The Wildcat Invitational will offer Tucsonans their first glimpse of Arizona's stellar freshman Erica Blasberg in action. She has already etched her name in the Arizona record books as she continues the tradition of freshman success in the Wildcat women's golf program. From Corona, Calif., Blasberg has notched top-three finishes in her last four events and boasts a stroke average of 72.28.
Arizona National Golf Club is located at 9777 E. Sabino Greens Drive near Sabino Canyon on Tucson's northeast side.

The Field: Eight teams ranked in the latest edition of the NGCA Coaches' Poll will compete in the 2003 Wildcat Invitational. Six Pac-10 conference squads will participate as well. Arizona freshman Erica Blasberg, top-rated in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, highlights the field individually.
