Beavers Outlast New Mexico, 18-16

Feb. 21, 2003

EL PASO, Tex. - Andy Jarvis and Seth Pietsch both tied Oregon State's record for hits in a game Friday afternoon, gathering five each in an 18-16 win over New Mexico in the Baseball Fiesta. The Beavers (4-3 overall) and Lobos (6-5) spent more than four hours trading extra-base hits over the windswept expanse of Cohen Stadium before OSU reliever Jared Sanders got the final out with the tying runs in scoring position; that gave Sanders the school-record 11th save of his career.

'Every once in a while, you just get games like that,' said Jarvis, who was 5-for-6 with two doubles, a home run and seven runs batted in. 'You just hope you're the team that wins it.'

OSU continues the tournament Saturday, meeting New Mexico State (9-1) at 9:30 a.m. PST and New Mexico at 2 p.m. PST. New Mexico defeated New Mexico State 6-2 in Friday's first game.

Pietsch was also 5-for-6, gathering a pair of doubles and a triple. He and Jarvis tied a school record that has been reached numerous times, most recently by Josh Carter in a 1999 game at Portland.

Jarvis came to the plate three times needing a triple to hit for the cycle, while Pietsch had two tries at a homer for the cycle. Chris Kunda was also a homer away from the cycle, but he got the single his last time up to complete a 3-for-5 day.

Every Beaver starter had at least one hit, eight of them drove in at least one run and seven of them scored at least one run. OSU had seven doubles, two triples and two homers, spraying line drives to take advantage of the spacious dimensions that start at 340 feet down the foul lines and rounded out to 410 feet in centerfield.

New Mexico, meanwhile, took advantage of a wind that blew stiffly out to straightaway center all afternoon. The Lobos had five homers, including Sean Murray's three-run shot with two out in the bottom of the ninth that made it 18-16.

'That's the way it works sometimes,' Pietsch said. 'You know you're hitting the ball well when you're hitting line drives. That's what you want, to make good contact - that's all you can ask for.'

There was momentary confusion during Murray's homer - it bounced off the flagpole just above the centerfield wall and back onto the field. With no umpire signalling 'home run,' the Beavers executed a relay that wound up with catcher Ian McMullen tagging Murray at the plate; the umpires then conferred and agreed that the ball had cleared the fence.

Sanders then entered the game, allowing a double and a walk to put the tying runs in scoring position. However, the junior righthander got Robert Lacheur to tap the ball to third baseman Tony Calderon, who threw to first to end the marathon.

The Beavers played errorless defense, and that proved a big difference. New Mexico committed two errors, both coming in the seventh inning and leading two four unearned runs that gave OSU an 18-12 lead.

Jarvis' big day moved him up several of OSU's all-time lists of career leaders. His mammoth three-run homer in the fourth inning was the 28th of his career, tying him for second with Al Hunsinger (1980-81) and trailing only the 34 hit by Joe Gerber (1997-2000); he also climbed to fourth in RBIs (134) and into a tie for sixth in doubles (35). Pietsch moved into a tie for second in career triples (8).

OSU jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Jarvis had a run-scoring double and Tony Calderon had a two-run homer, his second homer of the season. The Lobos tied the game in the bottom of the inning, though, as Beaver righthander Ben Rowe issued walks ahead of two-run homers to Dusty Young and Chris Alexander.

Oregon State regained the lead in the top of the second as Kerisi Reynolds scored on Jacoby Ellsbury's groundout to make it 6-5. After Mike Ekstrom came on to pitch a scoreless second inning, OSU pushed the lead to 11-5 with a five-run third inning that included a two-run double by Jarvis and a run-scoring triple by Kunda.
