Beavers Upset No. 3 Utah 196.900-196.325
Feb. 21, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 9 Oregon State gymnastics team was without one of its top all-arounders, but that didn't stop the Beavers from recording their third upset of a top six team this year. This time, the Beavers defeated No. 3 Utah 196.900-196.325 in front of 3,643 fans at the Precision Cuts Main Event at Gill Coliseum on Friday night. OSU had already beaten No. 1 UCLA and No. 6 Arizona State earlier this year.
All-American Tanya Ricioli did not compete because of illness, but those who did compete stepped up and hit 23 of 24 routines to lead the Beavers to their second highest score of the year and their first win over the Utes since 1999.
'I'm extremely proud of this team. We had one of our top all-arounders out with the flu, and some of them just found out in the locker room a few hours before the meet that we needed them to compete,' coach Tanya Chaplin said. 'Their character is unbelieveable. They never cease to amaze to me.'
Lindsay Nelson responded with the best meet of her career, tying for first in the all-around with a career-high 39.575, which tied the eighth best all-around score in OSU history. She placed second on vault with a career-high tying 9.925, and she set a career-high on bars with a 9.925 to tie for third. She added a 9.875 on floor and a 9.85 on beam.
Elizabeth Jillson won bars for the third week in a row, tying her career-high of 9.95 to match Utah's Theresa Kulikowski for the win on Friday.
Jillson and Nelson led a Beaver bar team that finished with a school record 49.500. Chrissy Lamun, Meghan Jones and Heidi Goehring all turned in career-highs of 9.875, allowing the Beavers to throw out Thrse Videan's career-high 9.80. OSU's previous best was a 49.475 at the 1999 Pacific-10 Championships.
OSU just missed out on another season-high on beam, with the Beavers finishing with a 49.250, just shy of last week's 49.275. Lamun led the Beavers with a career-high 9.925 to tie for third. Elaine Yoder added a 9.90 for the second week in a row, and Nelson helped OSU's cause with her 9.85. The Beavers also counted Daylee Ingalls' 9.80 and Angela Morales' 9.775. Goehring, who filled in for Ricioli on the event, fell for a 9.375 but the Beavers didn't need to count her score.
The Utes, who came into Corvallis as the second-ranked beam team in the country, weren't as fortunate on the event. Kulikowski and Kim Allan tied for first with a pair of 9.95s, and Annabeth Eberle equaled Lamun's 9.925 but the three other Ute competitors fell to force them to count a 9.40 and a 9.45.
OSU got off to a strong start on vault, its first event. Nelson led the way with her 9.925, and the Beavers got 9.80 scores out of Morales, Jones and Ingalls and also counted a 9.775 from Heather Justus
Morales led the Beaver floor team with a career-high-tying 9.925, good for a second-place tie with Utah's Melissa Vituj. Kulikowski won the event with a 9.95. Nelson had a season-high 9.875, and Justus led off with a 9.80. Videan scored a 9.775, and Lamun had a 9.675. Goehring competed on the event for the first time in her college career and finished with a 9.65 in Ricioli's absence.
