Day One Results From MPSF Championships

The University of California men's and women's indoor track and field teams completed the first day of competition at the Mountain Pacific Sports Championships held at the Jackson Track in the Idaho Sports Center in Boise, Idaho. The competition features teams from the Big West, Mountain West, Pac-10, Western Athletic and West Coast conferences.
Finals events for the day included the women's 3,000m run, pole vault, long jump and weight throw. Freshman Antonette Carter had the best performance in the finals on the women's side, finishing fifth in the long jump (18-2.50). Fellow frosh, Brooke Meredith, placed ninth in the long jump with a mark of 17-10.25. Both of those marks in the long jump were their best of the season. Senior Leora Ward and sophomore Tamrya d'Artenay both garnered 13th-place finishes in the pole vault and weight throw (49-9.25), respectively.
Finals events for the men included the 3,000m run, high jump, long jump and shot put. Freshman Teak Wilburn was in top form, placing second and notching his best mark of the season in the high jump at 7-1.75. That mark meets NCAA provisional qualifying standards. Sophomore David Glasgow finished fifth in the long jump at 6-10.75. Sophomore Girmay Guangul placed fifth in the 3,000m (8:22.35), while senior Vincent Ibia turned in his best mark this season in the long jump (21-11.00). Redshirt freshman Rhuben Williams also posted a season-best mark, finishing sixth in the shot put (58-4.75).
Finals events for tomorrow include the women's triple jump, high jump, 5,000m, mile, 60mH, 60m, 400m, 800m, shot put, 200m, 4x400m relay and distance medley relay. On the men's side, finals events include the weight throw, pole vault, mile, triple jump, 60mH, 60m, 400m, 800m, 200m, 5,000m, 4x400m relay and distance medley relay.
Prelims for several of those events were held today. Those making the finals for the women's 800m include senior Erin Belger who turned in the day's second-best prelim time at 2:10.85 and senior Lache Bailey who finished in 2:11.27. Freshman Osarhiemen Omwanghe placed fourth in the 60mH (8.48) and Carter qualified for the 60m dash final, turning in the day's seventh-best time in prelims at 7.69.
For the men, junior Tim Bogdanof turned in the day's best prelim time in the 60mH (7.96), while sophomore Toby Atawo qualified for tomorrow's 60m (6.85) and 200m (21.39) dash finals. His time in the 200m was the second best in the preliminaries. Senior Ahmad Wright qualified for the 400m (48.45).
The MPSF Championships conclude Saturday. Events begin at 10 a.m. with the men's weight throw final, and end at 2:20 p.m. with the men's distance medley relay final. For more information and results, please visit www.calbears.com.
