Holliday Breaks School Record in Mountain Pacific Track Champs First Day

Feb. 21, 2003

NAMPA, Idaho - University of Oregon redshirt senior Becky Holliday posted an NCAA automatic qualifying mark and nearly a foot season best Friday to break the school pole vault record by a half-inch in the opening day of the Mountain Pacific Championships at Jacksons Track in the Nampa Sports Center.

The Sparks, Nev., native Holliday opened the afternoon at a mark near her previous season best of 13-2 1/4, and after a third-attempt clearance, had less trouble with subsequent heights and eventually finished second overall with a mark of 14-1 3/4 behind NCAA record holder Amy Linnen of Arizona (first, official mark unavailable).

'Becky rolled the dice by starting at a height a fraction higher than she had cleared all year,' Oregon women's head coach Tom Heinonen said, 'but it paid off. After she made that, she got on a roll and jumped great at every height after that.'

The two-time All-American and outdoor school record holder Holliday joins teammate Niki McEwen on the NCAA automatic list after McEwen had raised the school record in mid-January in the Pole Vault Summit to 14-1 1/4 - a mark that still led the collegiate list this week. Holliday's previous indoor best was 13-9 3/4 from the 2002 season, and her outdoor school record of 14-1 1/4 came in the Mt. SAC Relays last April.

Also in the pole vault Friday, Duck junior Kirsten Riley was only two inches from her personal best (eighth-tie, 12-8), and redshirt senior Georgette Moyle followed in 10th (mark unavailable).

Other Duck indoor personal bests Friday came from senior Heather Murtaugh (200 prelims, 11th, 24.89), sophomore Michelle Donovan (400, 18th, 58.28), and Amanda Brown (long jump, third, 18-9). Senior Jordan Sauvage led the UO throwers with her second-best mark ever in the weight throw (ninth, 53-3 1/2).

Looking ahead to Saturday's final day action, senior Janette Davis (400, sixth, 56.55) and redshirt freshman Sara Schaaf (800, eighth, PR 2:15.29) advanced from Friday's prelims, and will be joined by five field event athletes - high jumpers Abby Andrus and Jenny Brogdon, Amanda Brown and Clarice Hayward-Lee in the triple jump and shot putter Whitney Gum.

'It was a good day for us with more to come Saturday,' Heinonen said. 'Sara got the final qualifying spot in the 800, Janette survived a foul and a protest from another coach to make the 400 final, Heather had a huge lifetime best, and Amanda got nipped out of second by less than an inch.'

On the men's side, freshman Duck hurdler Eric Mitchum ranked third in the prelims of the 60 hurdles (7.98), .02 seconds behind the day's co-leaders - Cal's Tim Bogdanof and Arizona's Jeff Hunter (7.96). Mitchum's mark was .02 seconds off his season and personal best, and .03 seconds shy of the NCAA provisional standard (7.95).

In other sprint action, freshman Matthew Scherer became the third Duck this season to run sub-49.00 seoncds in the 400 (11th, 48.84) and was .39 seconds shy of advancing to the final.

Senior James March was the lone Duck in Friday's men's field events, and finished 12th in the shot put (53-11 1/4), the third of four indoor meets so far in 2003 that were better than his preseason best of 52-2 1/2. The Hillsboro, Ore., native entered the competition seeded 12th overall with a season best of 55-1.

Looking ahead to Saturday's entries, other Duck competitors besides Mitchum in the 60 hurdle final include top-ranked triple jumper and senior Foluso Akinradewo, pole vaulters Jason Slye and Trevor Woods and weight throw entrant Adam Kriz (fourth-ranked in the event and 14th nationally, and an NCAA provisional qualifier).
