Tempe, AZ - The No. 9 UCLA women's tennis team dropped to 6-4 on the season, falling to No. 8 Arizona State, 4-3 at the Whiteman Tennis Center on Friday. All four of the Bruins' losses this season have come against top-10 teams and all have been 4-3 decisions.
Arizona State began the afternoon by edging the Bruins in doubles play. Lauren Fisher and Sara Walker lost to ASU's Lauren Colalillo and Adria Engel 9-7, while Laura Gordon and Sarah Gregg fell to the Sun Devils' Joslynn Burkett and Megan Yeats 8-3. UCLA's Jackie Carleton and Susi Wild prevailed over the nationally 37th-ranked doubles pair of Mhairi Brown and Cindy Sureephong 8-5.
Walker began singles play against No. 21 Engel, but had to retire due to injury. At the time of her retirement, Engel led 4-3 in the first set, giving the Sun Devils the first singles point.
Carleton and Wild repeated their winning ways, this time on the singles court. No. 84 Carleton beat No. 39 Dora Krstulovic 2-6, 6-2, 4-3, while Wild beat No. 109 Brown 6-4, 6-2.
Gregg gave the Bruins their third singles win of the afternoon, beating Sureephong 6-4, 6-2, but Arizona State eventually took the win in the last two matches. Colalillo beat Laura Gordon 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and Burkett beat Anya Loncaric 7-5, 6-4.
UCLA continues its Arizona trip in Tucson against the No. 24 Wildcats on Saturday at 11 a.m. Pacific Time. These matches will not count toward the Pac-10 standings, though the contests in March in Los Angeles will. UCLA's next home match is next Wednesday against local rival Loyola Marymount.
