Feb. 21, 2003
Columbus, Ga. - Solo home runs by Catalina Morris (Sonoita, AZ), Maureen LeCocq (Woodland Hills, CA) and Lauren Lappin (Anaheim, CA) gave the 12th-ranked Stanford softball team a 3-0 lead over North Carolina before the game was called in the fifth inning due to rain on Friday afternoon at the eighth annual NFCA Leadoff Classic.
The Tar Heels threatened in the first inning when Tiffany Tolleson laid down a bunt single to start the game. Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA), making her third start of the year, got Megan Welch to ground into a fielder's choice and Jaclyn Porter to foul out to third baseman Elizabeth Bendig (Santa Ana, CA). Stanford catcher Jessica Allister (Nacogdoches, TX) made the final out of the inning when she gunned down Welch, who was try to steal second.
The Cardinal wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Morris, Stanford's second batter, hit her first career home run to left center field off North Carolina starter Crystal Cox for the 1-0 lead.
After allowing base hit and a walk in the top of the second inning, Sorensen then fanned the next three Tar Heel batters to preserve the lead. With one out in the bottom of the inning, LeCocq hit her first homer of the season over the left field fence for the 2-0 Cardinal advantage.
For the third consecutive inning, Lappin led off with her first career solo shot and Stanford held 3-0.
In the bottom of the fifth inning following a Meghan Sickler (Houston, TX) fly out to center, Lappin doubled down the right field line before the game was called.
In five complete innings, Sorensen recorded seven strikeouts and allowed only three hits.
Stanford and North Carolina will continue play in the bottom of the fifth inning tomorrow at noon in the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Cardinal will then battle Southern Mississippi at 5 p.m. and third-ranked Nebraska at 7 p.m. at the South Commons Complex.
