Bears Take Sixth, Seventh at MPSF Championships

Feb. 22, 2003

The University of California men's and women's indoor track and field teams finished sixth and seventh, respectively at the Mountain Pacific Sports Championships held at the Jackson Track in the Idaho Sports Center in Boise, Idaho. The men garnered 54 points, while the women earned 21. The competition featured teams from the Big West, Mountain West, Pac-10, Western Athletic and West Coast conferences.

Sophomore Toby Atawo turned in one of the Golden Bears' best performances of the day, winning the 200m dash with a season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 21.26. Not only was his victory impressive, but that time is just a tenth of a second off from a qualifying time for the 2003 World Championships, set to take place Mar. 14-15 in Birmingham, England. Atawo finished third in the 60m dash finals with another season-best time of 6.90. Junior Bruce Giron garnered a runner-up finish in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 50-1.25. The men's distance medley relay team of sophomore Carlos Carballo, senior Martin Conrad, freshman Kevin Davis and sophomore Girmay Guangul also did well, placing fourth in 10:14.76. Rounding out Cal's top five finishes, was junior Tim Bogdanof with a fifth-place showing in the 60m hurdles in 7.99-his season-best.

On the women's side, Cal got solid performances from senior Erin Belger who finished fifth in the 800m run with a season-best finals time of 2:11.29. The Bears' 4x400m relay and distance medley relay both notched fifth-place finishes. The team of junior Stephanie Cowling, senior Lache Bailey, junior Brooke Meredith and freshman Osarhiemen Omwanghe clocked a 3:47.91 time in the 4x400m relay, while Cal's distance medley squad of Belger, sophomores Shannan Hawes and Lindsay Maclise and freshman Bridget Duffy turned in a time of 12:04.02. Omwanghe placed sixth in the 60m hurdles with a season-best time of 8.56, while fellow frosh, Antonette Carter placed eighth in the 60m dash (7.75). Duffy finished seventh in the 1600m (4:58.40h). In the field events, junior Jenna Johnson was the Bears' highest-placer in the shot put with a season-best mark of 48-9.50.

UCLA won the MPSF Championship on the men's side with 127.5 points, while the Lady Bruins finished second at 161.5 points. Stanford's women's team won the championship (171 points), while the Cardinal men's squad took second with 99 points.

Only two events remain during the indoor season as the USATF Indoor Combined Events and the NCAA Indoor Championships loom ahead. The combined events competition takes place Mar. 7-8 in Chapel Hill, NC, while the NCAAs are Mar. 14-15 in Fayetteville, AR.

The Golden Bears kick off their outdoor season with the Blue & Gold Intrasquad meet at Edwards Stadium, Mar. 1. Events begin at 11 a.m.
