Beavers Lose Two At Baseball Fiesta

Feb. 22, 2003

EL PASO, Tex. - Jacoby Ellsbury had a six-hit day but Oregon State lost twice Saturday at the Baseball Fiesta, falling to New Mexico State 15-7 and New Mexico 14-7 at Cohen Stadium. The freshman outfielder was 4-for-4 with a triple in the loss to NMSU, then had a pair of doubles against UNM.

OSU (4-5 overall) wraps up the tournament Sunday against New Mexico State (10-1) at 9:30 a.m. PST; the event conclues with the Aggies taking on the Lobos (7-5).

On Saturday, the Beavers couldn't keep up the longball pace with the desert teams on another windy day. New Mexico State had a pair of home runs in a four-run eighth inning that broke a 7-7 tie; New Mexico added three more homers in the second game that drove in seven runs.

The Beavers' Andy Jarvis doubled against NMSU, moving the senior first baseman into a tie for fifth on OSU's list of all-time career leaders in that category with 38; he was 2-for-5 against the Aggies. Junior third baseman Tony Calderon was 3-for-4 against UNM with two doubles and a triple and senior outfielder Chris Biles was 2-for-3 with a double against the Lobos and finished the day 4-for-7 with three runs batted in.

Freshman righthander Kenny Anderson was effective for the Beavers, finishing both games and pitching five scoreless innings on the day. Anderson allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out five over the two games.

Against New Mexico State, OSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Ellsbury singled home two runs and Chris Biles doubled home another. The Aggies tied it in the top of the third, with three of their four runs unearned, but OSU came back with two runs in the bottom of the third to make it 6-4. The Beavers went up 7-4 on Ellsbury's two-out, run-scoring bunt single in the fourth.

NMSU got even in the fifth, though, picking up three runs on four hits with an OSU error making one of the runs unearned. It stayed deadlocked at 7-7 until the eighth, when Alex Borgo led off with a homer against Beaver reliever Jon Koller; after the next two hitters singled, Billy Becher's sixth homer of the year for the Aggies made it 11-7.

Against New Mexico, the Lobos grabbed a quick 2-0 lead on Chris Alexander's two-run homer off senior righthander Stephen Copeland in the first inning. The Beavers got back into a tie in the second when Biles singled and the ball was mishandled by the rightfielder and skipped all the way to the wall, allowing Calderon to score from second and sending Biles all the way around the bases to make it 2-2.

UNM answered immediately with four runs in the top of the third, aided by a pair of OSU errors, to take the lead for good at 6-2. The Lobos put the game away with five runs in the sixth to go up 14-2, as Sean Murray started the inning with a homer and Cory Lizarraga added a grand slam four hitters later.

OSU tried to make a game of it in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four times on two hits, a walk and a pair of hit batters to get within 14-6. Biles' run-scoring single in the ninth plated the Beavers' final run.
