Rain Strikes Again For Stanford AT NFCA Leadoff Classic

Feb. 22, 2003

Columbus, Ga. - The 12th-ranked Stanford softball team were finally able to finish a game at the rainy NFCA Leadoff Classic, playing the final two innings and beating North Carolina 6-0 on Saturday afternoon. In the second game the Cardinal, 11-2 overall, were up 2-0 over Southern Mississippi in the bottom of the sixth inning before the game was called due to rain.

Stanford added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to beat North Carolina 3-0 in its first contest of the day. The game was called in the fifth due to rain on Friday afternoon and play picked up with one out and Lauren Lappin (Anaheim, CA) on second. Following a Catalina Morris (Sonoita, AZ) walk, Kira Ching (San Lorenzo, CA) doubled to right scoring Lappin. Jessica Allister (Nacogdoches, TX) continued the Cardinal scoring with a base hit up the middle to plate Morris and Ching for the 6-0 Stanford lead.

Maureen LeCocq (Woodland Hills, CA) pitched the final two innings for the Cardinal, striking out four and allowing only one Tar Heel hit. Starter Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) picked up the win, pitching five complete innings and tallying seven strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the year.

Following four scoreless innings and a 40-minute rain delay, LeCocq recorded Stanford's first hit of the game against Southern Mississippi in the top of the fifth inning. LeCocq then advanced to second on Cassi Brangham's (Clovis, CA) sacrifice bunt. Meghan Sickler (Houston, TX) continued the Cardinal rally with a base hit and moved Laura Severson (Frankfort, IL), who was running for LeCocq, to third. Sickler stole second base and pinch-hitter Michelle Thiry (Renton, WA) hit a clutch single between the Southern Miss' shortstop and third baseman, scoring Severson.

Sickler was tagged out at the plate on Elizabeth Bendig's (Santa Ana, CA) attempted squeeze bunt for the second out of the inning. An error by the Golden Eagle third baseman on Lappin's hit loaded the bases for the Cardinal, allowing Morris to come through with a single to left scoring Thiry. Southern Miss starting pitcher Jessica Holaway then got Ching to pop out and end the inning, but Stanford held a 2-0 advantage.

Sorensen came in to pitch in the fifth for Cardinal starter Tori Nyberg (Bemont, CA) and struck out the side to preserved the lead.

The game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to rain and will be played tomorrow at 10 a.m. Stanford will also battle third-ranked Nebraska at 11 a.m. at the South Commons Softball Complex.
