Baseball Rallies from 14-0 deficit

Feb. 23, 2003

EL PASO, Texas - Oregon State scored 16 unanswered runs to overcome a 14-0 deficit and defeat New Mexico State 16-14 Sunday in the Beavers' final game of the Baseball Fiesta at Cohen Field. OSU (5-5), which lost to NMSU 15-7 Saturday, finished the trip 2-2.

Trailing 14-8 entering the eighth inning, Oregon State completed the comeback with eight runs against three Aggie pitchers. Chris Biles, who hit a two-run double to bring the Beavers within one, scored the go-ahead run on a ground out by Chris Kunda. Seth Pietsch followed with a bunt single to score Rob Recuenco and give the Beavers a two-run lead.

'If I had any reasonable baseball knowledge to explain that, I'd tell you,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'Down 14 runs and playing as poorly as we were playing, to compete like that and have a chance to win says a lot about the guys on our club.'

Andy Baldwin, who pitched the Beavers out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the seventh, picked up his first win of the season. The redshirt freshman allowed one hit and struck out two in 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

'Andy Baldwin came in and shut the door,' Casey said. 'He was outstanding. Kurt Steele (3 1/3 innings, one unearned run) did a great job holding the fort and gave us a chance to get back in it.'

New Mexico State chased OSU starter Jared Sanders with eight runs in the third. The Aggies added a run in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 14-0 lead.

'Down 14-0 you don't usually have that positive of an attitude, but the nature of this team is that you always think you have a chance,' said OSU first baseman Andy Jarvis, who also hit a two-run double in the eighth. 'Once we started putting the ball in play, they started kicking it around and we got some momentum. This can do a lot for our team. We know we can pick each other up and come back.'

In the top of the sixth OSU took advantage of five Aggie errors and scored five runs, four of which were unearned. The Beavers had zero hits in the in the seventh, but scored three unearned runs to close within six.

'At 14-8 we were within striking distance if we did the right things,' Casey said. 'As crazy as this park is, anything is possible. To do this against a team that was 10-1 and us having six freshmen on the field is tremendous.'

Oregon State will participate in the Clash of the Conferences Thursday through Saturday in Lancaster, Calif., where it will face Cal State-Northridge and San Diego State twice. The Beavers will then make their first home appearance of the season Mar. 4 versus Portland.
