No. 4 Cal Scores Seven Runs in the 7th to Blank Illinois State, 11-0

The fourth-ranked California softball team wrapped up the NFCA Leadoff Classic Sunday afternoon with a solid 11-0 victory past Illinois State at South Commons Field in Columbus, GA. The Golden Bears (12-3) finished in second place in the four-team pool with a 2-1 record as the Redbirds fall to 6-8 for the season with an 0-3 mark at the Classic.
Senior Jen Deering tossed her fifth win of the season, improving her overall mark of 5-1. The righty struck out five, allowing only four hits and one walk. Audra Rast suffered the loss (3-4), as the Bears ripped eight hits and collected seven walks off the senior hailer. Sheila Emms relieved Rast in the seventh with one out, collecting the next two outs to end the inning.
Cal began its procession of scoring in the third with two runs and then again in the sixth with another two runs, leading Illinois State 4-0. The Bears unleashed their bats in the seventh, gathering seven runs. Freshman Haley Woods launched her second home run of the season, a three-run blast in the seventh.
Deering held off the Redbirds with one hit until the bottom of the seventh, as they threatened with three base hits but were unable to cross the plate.
Woods led the Cal offensive attack with a 3-for-5 performance (1 run, 5 RBI) and sophomore Kaleo Eldredge batted 2-for-5 (1 run, 1 RBI). Lauren Bierwirth collected two of the four hits for the Redbirds with a 2-for-3 showing.
Next up, California travels to the Worth Tournament in Fullerton, facing Northwestern and Cal State Fullerton Fri. Feb. 28 in the three-day tournament.
