No. 5 Softball Defeats Temple, 4-3
Feb. 23, 2003
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The fifth-ranked Washington softball team (12-0-1) defeated Temple(1-4), 4-3, Sunday to complete a sweep of its NFCA Leadoff Classic opponents.
The Huskies scored a run in the bottom of the first inning when Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) got a two-out triple out of a bloop hit that fell just in front of a diving Owl right fielder. Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.) followed with a single to the right-center gap, scoring Clark and putting Washington on top, 1-0.
Temple battled back in the top of the third inning, manufacturing two runs off of two hits, a walk and a sacrifice. With runners on first and third, TU's Lynsey Grace hit a ball down the left field line, which gave the Owls the 2-1 advantage.
The lead was short lived, however, as Washington scored three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.) reached base on a Temple error and scored on Clark's third home run of the season. Rivera followed suit, blasting her sixth home run of the year in the following at-bat to take the 4-2 lead.
TU made one last attempt at a possible upset as Chrissy Harris led off the top of the seventh with a home run over the centerfield fence. Huskies ace, Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) then took over, sitting the Owls down in order to earn her sixth victory of the season. Bollinger scattered five hits and two walks, while striking out five.
Washington returns to action next week when it plays in the Worth Invitational in Fullerton, Calif., Feb. 28-March 2. The Huskies will play No. 20 Pacific, No. 21 Ohio State, Northwestern, Portland State and Purdue.
