Feb. 23, 2003
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Sophomore left hander Wes Whisler allowed only two hits through six innings, to lead the Bruins (7-7) to a 3-0 victory over Utah in the second day of the Dominos Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic at Texas A&M on Sunday. The win marked the second UCLA shutout of the tournament and the season.
Whisler earned his first win of 2003, lasting six innings and allowing no runs on two hits. The left-hander faced only 21 batters.
The Bruins got on the board in the top of the first after Matt Thayer led off the game with a double down the left field line. Thayer advanced to third after a balk was called, but a fly out from Brett McMillan and a foul out from Billy Susdorf left him on third with two outs. First baseman Hector Ambriz reached on an error by the shortstop and Thayer crossed the plate.
UCLA threatened again in the third as Wes Whisler hit a one-out single up the middle. After an Ambriz flew out to left, Ryan McCarthy doubled to left center to put runners at the corners for Warren Trott. However, a ground out to the shortstop ended the inning for the Bruins. At the end of three innings, UCLA led Utah, 1-0.
As in the third, another Bruin scoring opportunity slipped by in the top of the fourth. Brandon Averill was issued a lead-off walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. After a strike-out to Jeff Abney, Thayer singled to right field. McMillan followed with a walk, to load the bases with one out. Susdorf hit a hard line drive to the shortstop, who after making the catch, caught McMillan between first and second to end the inning.
For the third consecutive inning, the Bruins mounted a rally in the top of the fifth. Whisler went to second on a two-base error from the catcher and Ambriz followed with a walk. McCarthy sacrificed the runners ahead with a bunt. Yet, consecutive strike-outs to Trott and Averill kept runners from coming home.
In the sixth, the Bruins put another run on the board, to lead 2-0. After Abney sruck-out, Thayer reached base after being hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a ground out from McMillan. Susdorf drove Thayer in on a single to right field. The rally and inning ended with a foul ball from Whisler being caught by the third baseman.
The Bruins tacked on another run in the top of the seventh with a solo-home run from McCarthy. The homer was his third of the season.
Junior right-hander Chris Cordeiro pitched the seventh inning, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out one to earn his second save of the season.
UCLA will be back in action this afternoon in a match-up with 19th-ranked Texas A&M at 5:00 p.m.
