THIS WEEK: The seventh-ranked Stanford men's tennis team plays its fifth of 14 home matches in 2002-03 on Tuesday afternoon when it takes on unranked Utah (4-4) at the Taube Tennis Center ... The Cardinal (6-2) then hits the road for the prestigious Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship on Friday-Sunday in La Jolla, California.
CARDINAL FINISHES TIED FOR FIFTH AT NATIONAL TEAM INDOORS: Stanford continued its tradition of success at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship by finished tied for fifth in the 16-team event last weekend at the Louisville Tennis Center ... The Cardinal went 2-1 on the weekend, and is now 75-20 (.789 winning percentage) at the event in 28 appearances ... Stanford opened up the event with an impressive 4-0 win over ninth-ranked Kentucky on Thursday ... The Cardinal prevailed at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles before posting straight set wins at Nos. 2, 4 and 6 singles ... Senior David Martin (Tulsa, OK) clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 ... In the quarterfinals, the Cardinal fell 4-0 to third-ranked Baylor on Friday ... Stanford then wrapped up the weekend with a 4-2 victory over 18th-ranked Texas A&M in a quarterfinal playoff on Sunday ... Stanford posted wins at Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles, with senior Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) providing the clincher at No. 3 ... Overall, Stanford has won a record 12 National Team Indoor Championships.
CARDINAL NOTES: Senior David Martin leads the team in singles victories with 16 ... Martin has six of his last eight matches, with all of the victories coming in straight sets ... Sophomore Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA) is second on the team in wins with 13 ... Lipsky and David Martin are first on the team with 12 doubles wins, while freshmen KC Corkery (Manhattan Beach, CA) and James Pade (Woodside, CA) have 11.
