UCLA Track & Field Opens 2003 Outdoor Season at Drake Stadium

This Saturday, March 1, Coach Jeanette Bolden will lead the Bruins as they kick off the 2003 outdoor season with a home meet at Drake Stadium. UCLA will host Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo, Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Fullerton in a quadrangular meet (9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 individual scoring; 9-7-6 relay scoring). The meet will begin at 9:00 AM with the women's hammer, followed by the men's hammer. The running events will begin at 12:30 with the women's 3000m Steeplechase.

MPSF Championship Results
At the 2003 MPSF Indoor Championships, held February 21-22 in Boise, ID, the Bruin women placed second with 161.5 points. The Stanford Cardinal won with 171 points. And, Washington State was third with 68 points.

The Bruins were victorious in five events at the meet. In the running events, sophomore Monique Henderson won the 200m (23.72, NCAA provisional), junior Lena Nilsson, the defending NCAA outdoor 1500m champion, won the 800m (2:05.15, NCAA automatic) and junior Sheena Johnson won the 60m hurdles (8.29, NCAA provisional). In the field events, sophomore Candice Baucham won both the long and triple jump (19-6.25 and 42-2.75, NCAA provisional).

Other top performers were: Tiffany Burgess (800m, second, 2:08.56), Alejandra Barrientos (1600m, second, 4:46.9, NCAA provisional), Valerie Flores (3000m, third, 10:01.48), Dawn Harper (60mH, third, 8.43, NCAA provisional), distance medley relay - Barrientos, Burgess, Nilsson and Melissa McBain (second, 11:44.14), Julie Stevenson (high jump, 5-09.75, NCAA provisional), Chelsea Johnson (pole vault, third, 13-05.00), Jessica Cosby (shot put, third, 53-6.25) and Cari Soong (weight throw, third, 61-7.75).
