Lindsay Nelson Named Pacific-10 Gymnast Of The Week
Feb. 25, 2003
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Lindsay Nelson was named the Pacific-10 Gymnast of the Week for her efforts in Oregon State's upset win over No. 3 Utah last week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Nelson won her first career all-around title to lead the No. 9 Beavers to the 196.900-196.325 win over the Utes on February 21, and she had a career night in the process.
The junior finished the evening with a career-high 39.575, the highest score by a Beaver all-arounder this year and the eighth best score in school history. She led OSU with a career-high 9.925 on vault, the best score for a Beaver vaulter this year. Nelson also chipped in a career-high 9.925 on bars to help the Beavers set a school record of 49.500 as a team on that event. She rounded out the night with a 9.875 on floor and a 9.85 on beam.
OSU defeated the Utes for the first time since 1999 and just the sixth time in 34 meetings against the perennial power.
Upon picking up the 9.925 on bars, Nelson became one of only two Beavers to score a 9.90 or better on all four events at least once in her career. She had a career-high 9.90 on beam in this year's season opener, and she had a personal best 9.90 on floor in the NCAA West Regional Championships last year. She had a 9.925 on vault last season as well.
After her performance last week, Nelson found herself in the national rankings on three events this week. She's ranked 18th on vault, 20th in the all-around and 25th on bars.
Nelson is the second Beaver to be named Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week this year. Teammate Tanya Ricioli was honored for her role in OSU's upset over No. 1 UCLA on January 24. It's the first time since the award began in 1996 that the Beavers have had two gymnasts honored in the same season.
