Jarvis' Bloop, Reynolds' Blast Boost Beavers

Feb. 27, 2003

LANCASTER, Calif. - Kerisi Reynolds' grand slam capped Oregon State's five-run ninth inning, boosting the Beavers to a 10-6 win over Cal State-Northridge on Thursday night in the Clash of the Conferences baseball tournament at Lancaster Municipal Stadium. Andy Jarvis' run-scoring had broken a 5-5 tie earlier in the inning for OSU (6-5 overall) on a bitter cold, windy evening.

The Beavers continue the tournament with two games on Friday, meeting San Diego State at 2 p.m. and then playing a rematch with the Matadors (3-11) at 6:30 p.m. Conditions are expected to become warmer as the tournament progresses, which comes as welcome news to an OSU squad that sprinted for the warmth of their bus minutes after the final out.

'Our guys battled through some tough conditions and got a win, and that's what's important right now,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said.

Cal State-Northridge's four-run seventh inning deadlocked the game at 5-5 and that was still the score going into the ninth. Rob Recuenco started the inning with a walk and Seth Pietsch followed with a double down the rightfield line that sent Recuenco to third against Matador reliever Edward Camacho.

Jarvis then fought off a two-ball, two-strike pitch and dumped a single just behind third base to drive in Recuenco with the go-ahead run and move Pietsch to third. Tony Caldero walked to load the bases and Levi Webber struck out for the first out of the inning, bringing Reynolds - a high school teammate of Jarvis - to the plate.

Reynolds, making his first plate appearance of the night after entering the game in the eighth inning as a pinch runner, watched Camacho's first two pitches miss the strike zone. He jumped on the third offering and drove it off the scoreboard beyond the left-centerfield wall for OSU's first grand slam of the season and the junior's second career home run.

'I was just looking to hit the ball in the air and get the runner in from third and get us a little more of a cushion,' Reynolds said. 'When I hit it, I knew it was either going out or it would at least be far enough to score the runner.'

Spending the first seven innings in a cold dugout didn't make things any easier.

'You've just got to keep moving around and stay active,' Reynolds said. 'You run down the line each inning to stay warm; some guys take it for granted, but you've got to do it. You've just got to block the cold out of your mind.'

Freshman righthander Kenny Anderson allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth but picked up his first career win. He relieved Jared Sanders with none out in the midst of the Matador's four-run seventh, then allowed just two runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk while striking out three.

Sanders, making just his second OSU start, pitched a career-high six-plus innings and received no decision. The junior righthander, who had been the Beavers' closer until last week, allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk, striking out five. Through five innings, he'd shut out the Matadors on two hits, walking none and striking out four; he gave up a run in the sixth but also pitched himself out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam.

'Jared did a nice job, and Kenny - coming in in those conditions - did a nice job,' Casey said. 'And Kerisi came up with the big hit for us.'

OSU's last grand slam was hit last April 14 by Tom Creighton against Hawai'i-Hilo. Creighton, voted OSU's Most Valuable player as a senior last season, happened to be on hand Thursday; he'd driven down from his family's farm near Fresno to watch his former teammates.

Pietsch finished the night 2-for-3, having also homered off the batter's backdrop in centerfield to give OSU a 1-0 lead in the third inning; Pietsch now has 90 career hits and 51 have gone for extra bases. Jarvis was 3-for-4 for OSU, and he took sole possession of third place on OSU's all-time list of career total base leaders with 306.
