Men's Golf Travels To Cleveland Golf Classic

Stanford Heads South: The Stanford men's golf team travels to Westlake Village, Calif., for the Cleveland Golf Classic, March 3-4, at the North Ranch Country Club (6,185 yards; par 71). Play begins with 36 holes on Monday, Mar. 3, beginning at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start and concludes on Tuesday, Mar. 4, with the final round beginning at 7:30 a.m. off the first and 10th tees.
Tournament Participants: Host-USC, Arizona State, Brigham Young, California, Fresno State, Houston, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, San Diego State, Stanford, Tennessee, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and Washington. Four of the teams (UCLA, Pepperdine, Washington, Tennessee) are ranked in the lastest GolfWeek Top 25 rankings, while four golfers ar in the Top 25 of the GolfWeek individual rankings.
Last Year: USC won the Cleveland Golf Classic last seaon, shooting 864. Brock MacKenzie of Washington won the individual title with a five-under par 208. Stanford placed seventh at last year's event with a three-round total of 890. The Cardinal was led by sophomore Blake Mastalir, who finished the tournament tied for 13th with a 219. Jim Seki tied for 45th overall, shooting a 227. Kevin Blue finished with a 230 to tie for 57th. Pat Phillips fired a two-over 73 on the last day to tied for 65th with a total of 233.
Last Time Out: The Stanford men's golf team shot a three-round total of 877 to finish 21st at the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate earlier this month. Jim Seki tied for 16th individually with a 212 while teammate George Downing tied for 54th at 218. Kevin Blue tied for 75th with a 222 (74-72-76) and Ron Won tied for 98th with a 226. Stanford's Pat Phillips finished tied for 115th with a 231.

Head Coach Jeff Mitchell: A former professional golfer on the PGA Tour and director of golf at Texas Tech, Jeff Mitchell begins his third year as the head men's golf coach at Stanford. Prior to coming to The Farm, Mitchell spent 10 years as the head women's golf coach at Texas Tech, an in 1998, he became the golf director for both the men's and women's programs. A 1989 graduate of Texas Tech, Mitchell earned a degree in physical education and his teaching certification in 1990. He was named District Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1996 and the Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1996. For nine years (1976-84), Mitchell was on the PGA Tour, playing in an average of 30 tournaments a year. He won the Phoenix Open in 1980 and had a dozen top-10 finishes as well as making 111 career cuts.
