No. 16 Trojans Dial Up Three Homers In 13-4 Rout At No. 9 Stanford

Feb. 28, 2003

STANFORD, Calif. - Michael Moon and Travis McAndrews had three hits each Friday and the No. 16 USC Trojans defeated the No. 9 Stanford Cardinal, 13-4, in non-conference action at Sunken Diamond. It was the first time USC has won a series opener at Stanford since April 16, 1999, when the Trojans won 10-1 and equaled the largest margin of victory (nine runs) since that game.

Brian Bannister (3-1) earned the win for USC (7-6) by going seven innings and allowing four runs on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Stanford dropped to 9-7 overall on the season and committed six errors, the most since a 13-7 win on Feb. 7, 1999, at Cal State Fullerton.

Back-to-back doubles by Joey Metropoulos (1-5, RBI) and Moon (3-5, 3 RBI) produced the first run of the game for the Trojans in the second.

USC added three runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead. McAndrews (3-4, RBI), who extended his hitting streak to seven games, hit a 3-1 pitch by Stanford starter John Hudgins (3-1) over the fence in right for his second homer of the season. Jon Brewster singled to right center and advanced to third on a two-base error by center fielder Sam Fuld followed by Anthony Lunetta, who jumped on the first pitch and hit a two-run homer to left, his second of the season.

Hudgins took the loss with six innings of work, allowing eight runs (six earned) on nine hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

The Cardinal got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Chris Lewis led off with a double to right center and advanced to third on a balk called against Bannister. Sam Fuld hit a sacrifice fly to right, plating Lewis. Carlos Quentin walked and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by catcher Ryan Garko. Designated hitter Danny Putnam hit a ball past a diving Metropoulos down the first base line for a double to score Garko.

In the top of the fourth, David Gordon hit his third home run of the season for the Trojans with a two-run shot to left center for a 6-3 lead for USC. Stanford cut the lead with a run in the sixth on an RBI single to center by first baseman John Mayberry, Jr., but Tobin Swope lined out into an inning-ending double play.

Four unearned runs for the Trojans came in the top of the seventh, culminating with a two-run single by Moon. Three Stanford errors in the ninth led to three more runs for the Trojans.

The series will continue tomorrow at 1 p.m. with the finale on Sunday (March 2), also at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker play-by-play, on usctrojans.com.
