No. 17 Softball Splits A Pair Of Games At CSUF Worth Tourney
Feb. 28, 2003
FULLERTON, Calif. - The No. 17 ranked Oregon State softball squad split a pair of games on Friday in opening round action at the CSUF Worth Tournament. The Beavers topped No. 20 Ohio State 2-1, in the opener before dropping a 4-3 contest to Northwestern in the afternoon.
The Beavers (14-6) jumped in front of the Buckeyes early, scoring a run in the third inning. Senior Brynnen Guthrie tallied a one-out single to center field and then recorded her first stolen base of the season to move into scoring position. Fellow senior Shelly Prochaska followed with an RBI single through the right side.
Ohio State (5-5) answered with a run of its own in the top of the fifth to knot the score, but the Beavers rallied in the bottom of the seventh for the victory.
Adrienne Alo led-off the frame with a single and Clare Burnum followed with a bunt single to put two runners aboard. Brynnen Guthrie sent a shot to left field that advanced both Alo and Burnum and then sophomore Kelly Petersen recorded the game-winning hit with an RBI single through the left side.
'It was a nice win to come back in the bottom of the seventh,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'Kelly (Petersen) hit the ball well all day and Shelly (Prochaska) came up with a big hit early.'
Junior pitcher Monica Hoffman earned the victory, allowing just four hits while striking out five in her 10th complete game.
'Monica pitched a nice game,' said Walker. 'Defensively we were pretty solid and overall it was a good win against a good team.'
The win marked the third straight for the Beavers against a ranked opponent.
Northwestern jumped in front in the second game, scoring a run in second and then adding two more in the fourth.
Oregon State rallied to knot the score in the top of the fifth after Petersen belted a three-run home run, her second deep shot of the season.
Northwestern answered with a run in the sixth to take the victory.
'We came out pretty well but we made a few mistakes defensively and opened up the door by giving them too many opportunities,' said Walker. 'We tied the game up on Kelly's home run which was great, but defensively we didn't make good decisions.'
Freshman pitcher Amy Klever earned the start and Hoffman (12-5) was credited with the loss after entering the game in the fifth inning.
'Hopefully we'll come out and play stronger tomorrow,' said Walker.
Oregon State returns to action on Saturday with a pair of games. The Beavers face Purdue at 2 p.m. followed by a 6 p.m. showdown with No. 24 Minnesota.
